I bought 2 of these the last time they were on sale. Mine works pretty well for the most part, aside from occasional disconnects (very rare). However, my wife tried installing the drivers for hers (win 8.1) and it ended up completely hosing her machine. She had to do a system restore to get it back, so YMMV.
This only connects through a computer as in a laptop, desktop, netbook. So, it will connect those devices to the wifi in your home, school, workplace, or coffee shop. I don't think there are mac and linux support. Most laptop's already have wifi, so it won't be necessary, unless the wifi in your laptop has weak signal or is broken.
This adapter has decent range and strength, I've been using it on my laptop 2 floors away for over 6 months, given it's wooden floors, and the signal is strong enough to stream 720p video, and almost 1080p depending on file size. It is one more thing that you have to plug in and it's not the most stylish device but it gets the job done.
Noob question, but what does it do? Does it just connect a computer to wifi? Or can it connect a usb printer or TV to wifi? (I.e. is it a usb-to-wifi bridge?)
