Supposedly, you can trade-in only in store. BUT he said that for tomorrow's preorder, you have to preorder online, pay full price, then go in to the store and trade in for credit and have proof you pre-ordered from them.
PS: dont hate the messenger
avoid the useless discussion which carrier is better ,we know both have flaws. keep it to $300 credit discussion and how to maximize it
AT&T will offer both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on September 19 for $0 down for AT&T Next customers. The entry-level iPhone 6 can be had for $32.50 a month on AT&T Next 12 month plans or $27.o9 a month on AT&T Next 18 month plans, while the 16GB iPhone 6 Plus will be available for $37.50 a month and $31.25 a month on AT&T's two installment plans. You will go through entering what kind of phone you have and will then receive a message back with a $200+ quote for an iPhone 4 or higher (just did this with an iPhone 4). It will clearly state that the quote is good for 21 days and instruct on how to save the message/image which has the code the AT&T store has to redeem.

PICTURES ATTACHED for the promotional card and trade-in receipt. See the bottom of this post.
As stated before, you can print out your trade-in quote from this link without having to wait for the "promotional code" to be emailed to you, which would be a problem since the promotional code will not be sent until your actual iPhone 6 order ships from the warehouse and the "promotion" is set to end on Sep. 30th.
I took this print out to a corporate AT&T retail location this afternoon. I did pre-order an iPhone 6, so I had a print-out of that receipt along with a screenshot of the ATT.com homepage that has the promo details about $200 trade-in credit for an iPhone 4, 4s, or 5.
The iPhone 4 I was trading in was locked to a foreign carrier (not a US-based carrier). I didn't have a SIM card for it. It also had a gouge in the middle of the screen. The back glass was mismatched to the front; I call it a "panda" phone because the front was black glass and the back was a replacement white glass. The home button also sticks, so sometimes you have to tap it three times before it registers.
I decided to go in today using the quote generated from the website since I figured that the AT&T stores would be so busy that they would be less likely to ask questions. I had a 20 minute wait to talk to a staff member. He said that the past two days has been the busiest days of the year.
When I told him about the promo, he didn't seem to know about the extra/bonus buy-back credit, but he looked at the quote that I had printed out and said it's no problem. He thought that the phone was my current phone, so he initially asked me if I want to trade it in and then use the credit to pre-order an iPhone 6 and to also buy a pre-paid (GoPhone-type) phone for $10 to hold me over until the iPhone 6 arrived. I told him that I had already pre-orderd, and I showed him my pre-order receipt. He said he'd just process the trade-in and it didn't really matter if I had pre-ordered an iPhone 6 to get the bonus/minimum credit; he just needed the promo code generated from this webpage .
He used essentially the same website on his checkout system that I had used, punched in the code from the quote, and it added a bonus $170 to the original trade-in credit of $30 (see attached picture). He noticed that the back didn't match the front, asked me about it, but didn't care. He noticed the gouge on the front of the screen but didn't care. He noticed the home button stuck, but he didn't care. He just needed the device to boot up so that he could get to the Settings -> About screen and take the IMEI number. He also noticed that it was a phone locked to another carrier, but he punched that into the website and it didn't seem to matter.
After about 10 minutes, he produced a "promotion card" with an expiration 6 months from now. He was kind enough to call the number on the back to confirm that the $200 was successfully loaded to the card.
The staff member also gave me the option of loading the credit to my AT&T account so that it would be applied to any upcoming bills or online purchases, but I declined. He confirmed that I can use it to make partial payments on bills (it didn't have to be used all-at-once), phones, or accessories, including bills for other services like U-Verse. I asked him why the quote page said "up to" $200 and he said that it just means that if the device is damaged, they don't have to give you the minimum $200. A completely shattered screen can be traded in for $0, one with minor damage only gets $30, etc. A 4, 4s, or 5 in decent condition will get a minimum $200. No accessories or cables needed, as in my case.
So after about 30 minutes, I turned in my busted iPhone 4 for $200 credit. See attached pictures.
What happened to my thread? (OkinawanMatt)
I noticed when I ran a search yesterday that there was only one thread that mentioned that there would be an upcoming trade-in deal for Verizon, T-mobile, and AT&T. The thread didn't have any information, and the first several pages (I read about 8 pages) said that you had to wait for your phone to ship to be able to trade-in.
I noticed that AT&T's partner site was giving the $200 and $300 quotes, meaning that you didn't have to wait for iPhones to ship before trading in. So I started a new thread with this specific information that wasn't included in the other thread.
So why did the mods merge these threads a day later? The first thread was a "heads-up, something's coming in a few weeks from Verizon, T-mobile, and AT&T", while my thread was "You can do it now through AT&T and here's how".
Q&A (according to what I was told)
Be careful with this promotion when ordering upgrade that is on backorder. My iphone 6+, ordered 9/15/14, will not ship until November and AT&T sent wrong promotion email ($200 off ATT Ipad) not the one everyone here is trying to use ($200 gift card). You're supposed to get an email letting you complete trade in. Then your supposed to get an email when your upgraded phone ships.
How to pay AT&T Bill with trade-in promotion card:
1. Go to www.att.com/tradein to verify you do have the amount of credit you want. In my case, $200.00
2. Log in your AT&T wireless account and choose "New Promotion Card". Enter the card number and expiration date in the pop-up windows. After confirm, you get a new "empty" slot with no name. In my attached figure, which I took AFTER I finished the payment, it shows "true, 0" now; but, when I was paying, it showed empty instead (you will understand what I mean when you try. Just don't be confused by the blank slot and don't change to other payments). Just click continue. In the next screen, you can see it is charging to the promotion card. Then just click submit.
3. Go back to the www.att.com/tradein, you will see the transaction. I attach a screenshot as well.
Final note: You usually have a credit card like Chase Ink give you 5% points on wireless bills, so you forfeit the chance to earn cash back by using the promotion card. But for me, I don't have other way to spend them.
