Plex, the awesome media server software, is changing their premium pricing in a week (9/29). Users who purchase before the deadline will lock-in their subscription rate.
Note: These changes will have no effect on the free offering.

Here are the new prices:
Monthly Plex Pass: $3.99 to $4.99 per month. (20% Increase, $60/year)
Annual Plex Pass: $29.99 to $39.99 per year. (25% Increase)
Lifetime Plex Pass: $74.99 to $149.99. (100% Increase)

Purchase subscription here [plex.tv].

Being a PlexPass subscriber gives you access to several exciting features:
Mobile Camera Upload
Plex Sync (Sync media to your device for offline use)
Cloud Sync (View and store your media with cloud storage providers)
Trailers & Extras
Free Mobile Apps
Multi-User Control
And more!

More info [plex.tv].
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

Here is the FAQ that was added by the Plex Team to the announcement post [plex.tv]:

Q: Sure, but are you going to bring X feature to app Y?
A: It's fair to assume we're shooting for feature parity, especially with big things like playlists and premium features like Extras.

Q: Why do Android Plex Pass members get the app for free, but not iOS/Windows?
A: We're working on the best way to address this inconsistency.

Q: I need to see a roadmap to know if it's worth it.
A: That's not a question. And we don't release roadmaps, but if we did, it would just be a giant neon sign saying AWESOME STUFF. With a really good bar serving microbrews and Mal?rt underneath the sign.

Q: Why is the Lifetime price going up so much compared to the others?
A: It's rising disproportionately compared to the other plans because, frankly, at 2.5x the price of a yearly, it was priced in an unsustainable way for us. Turns out humans have a rather long lifespan.

Q: Is the subscription bound to a device or a server?
A: Generally speaking it's bound to a server (or servers, if you have more than one). There's one feature (Camera Upload) which requires a Plex Pass on the app, but we're going to be fixing that.

Q: I just subscribed, do I get a refund if I upgrade?
A: As the great Chuck Norris once said "Anything else would be less than civilized". And then he crushed a piece of carbon into a diamond. With his beard. When you upgrade, we issue a we issue a prorated refund or credit of the amount remaining on your current plan. For example, if you're half-way into a monthly subscription, we'll refund you about two bucks.

Q: Do I get all future features or not? What's with the disclaimer around premium content?
A: The reason why we always have the disclaimer is simple. Let's say in the future we added some sort of PNetflix-like service (silent P) where we streamed premium movies. There's no way we could afford that based on a Plex Pass, so we'd need to make it a separate feature with additional cost. But for example, the mega-cool Extras feature we just added involved licensing premium content, and everyone with a Plex Pass got it for free. So we're just being up front and making sure we're not limiting ourselves in the future.

Still torn....nothing they offer now makes it worth it alone. However im afraid of what they will with hold in the future...but I supposed thats what they are hoping for.

Also not a hot deal imo

I completely understand your reasoning. The promise of features-to-be is always a little scary with software companies. Plex has a pretty good track record of keeping things moving along though, and PlexPass does offer several cool features now. Another one is Beta access, so you can try out new features first.

I agree that this isn't a "hot" deal right now, but on 9/30 the lifetime subscription would be a great deal (50% off) for those who were looking to buy. Hopefully it will be helpful to those who have been sitting on the fence for months and felt like the price wasn't going to increase.

Thanks for posting. I was just out on the page last night and didn't see this. I was about to pull the trigger, but also torn. I don't have great upload so the sync would be nice, though I typically re-encode stuff before I go on vacation. Other than that, I would have purchased it months ago at $50.

Sync is an awesome feature, I just wish my phone had more space!

What's the use of plex pass? Not worth the premium IMO.

PlexPass is not for everyone, but the benefits/features are listed in the OP. Definitely a pretty steep premium (not as bad as its going to be in a week though!).

I'm just glad that they have no plans on limiting the free Plex offering with these changes.

Not really. More of a convenience of not connecting your cable to copy media to your device.

Agreed - I've been a lifetime Plex user - since pre-alpha - and haven't used a single one of those features Smilie

My plex server sits at home hosting all the TV/Music/1600+ movies 24x7 without issue! waveBig Grinwave

At the rate they're going - and the closed-nature of Plex now, I wouldn't hesitate thinking they'll start charging to install the server or up the apps as well.

Other than that, Plex is AWESOME!

I became a Lifetime member at 74.99 a couple of weeks ago. I did so for a few reasons:

1. Support the devs. If they aren't making money, one day the whole thing will fold.
2. I can add Plex friends to stream from my library.
3. I consider myself an early adopter, and I love to test things before they go live.
4. Support the devs. If they aren't making money, one day the whole thing will fold.
5. When I signed up, it was a must to be a Pass holder for Chromecast support. Impulse buying didnt let me wait for general CC support.
6. Support the devs. If they aren't making money, one day the whole thing will fold.
