Transformers: Age of Extinction, otherwise known as Transformers 4, is a continuation in the series of the first three Michael Bay movies that made Paramount oodles of money and sold a ton of Hasbro toys. Released in theaters on June 27th, 2014, it made $245 million domestically and over $845 million internationally, totaling a haul of $1,080,788,377 to date. This Transformers movie has the distinction of making the most money internationally of all of the movies in this franchise, showing how Hollywood increasingly depends on foreign box office grosses to make mega-profits.

Jettisoning all of the human characters from the first three movies, including lead Shia LeBeouf and continuing the story from the last movie where the Deceptions invaded Chicago, all Transformers are now considered enemies of the state, both Autobots and Deceptions. Being hunted down by both the government and a mysterious, ruthless new robot hunter, Lockdown who has his own agenda, all Transformers have gone into hiding. But inventor Mark Wahlberg finds a run-down semi-truck that looks like Optimus Prime. Once the government finds out, all hell breaks loose and there are lots of explosions. Did you expect anything less from director Michael Bay? Smilie

Featuring the cinematic debut of the fan-favorite Dinobots, a darker, grittier take on the franchise and leaving some unanswered questions to be answered in the next two movies of this new Transformers trilogy of films, this movie drops on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, Sept. 30th. There’s tons of retailer exclusives for this one, so let’s check out the details:
_______________________________________________________________________

DVD/Blu-Ray Editions:

There are three editions:

1.) The Single Disc DVD only set
2.) The Three Disc DVD/Blu-ray + digital HD copy
3.) The Four Disc DVD/Blu-ray/3D Blu-Ray + digital HD copy

A note about the digital copy, some sources say you have a choice of iTunes or Ultraviolet digital copy, others say it is only an UltraViolet digital copy. When the movie comes out on Tuesday, we will know which one of these is true.

DVD & Blu-Ray Special Features:

A JPEG of each edition is on the bottom of the post.

1.) The Single Disc DVD only set:

- No special features, just the movie

2.) The Three Disc DVD/Blu-ray + digital HD copy

- Bay on Action: In-depth interview with Michael Bay about his vision and approach to the film's mind-blowing action sequences.

- Generation 2: A look at where the fourth film picks up as we meet new faces—both man and machine—and a Transformers world after the Battle of Chicago.

- Drive like Hell: Two entirely re-envisioned models of OPTIMUS PRIME and BUMBLEBEE appear in the film, along with an intimidating new nemesis, LOCKDOWN, as a Lamborghini Aventador plus other incredibly cool cars including a sophisticated Bugatti Veyron and a sleek Pagani Huayra. Check them out and see how actor Jack Reynor learned how to drive his Sonic rally car for the intense chase sequences.

- Small Town, Big Movie: When Transformers rolls into some small Texas towns, the normally quiet and picturesque countryside is suddenly alight with explosive action. Explore the different locations with members of the show's art department and hear from robotics students whose designs appear as part of Cade's lab.

- Shadow Protocol Activated: Follow the production to Detroit with unprecedented access to GM's Lansing plant and Milford Proving Grounds test track; watch an impressive indoor car chase created in an auto parts factory; return to Chicago where location managers discovered a historical movie theater that served as the backdrop for Cade's fateful first encounter with OPTIMUS PRIME; and finally travel to Washington state and the unlikely site of a never-used nuclear power plant.

- The Last Stand: A vacant lot in downtown Detroit is turned into a square block of Hong Kong. Watch as it literally takes shape from the ground up—then marvel as the crew blows it up piece by piece.

- The People's Republic: China plays an extremely prominent role in the film both on-screen and behind-the-scenes; in fact, four Chinese actors were chosen from thousands of applicants on a reality TV show to appear in the movie. In addition, the production traveled to Hong Kong, the beautiful valley of Wulong Karst National Park in Chongqing and the Great Wall in Beijing to capture breathtaking footage.

- Rise of the DINOBOTS: Several new TRANSFORMERS characters make their live-action debut in this film. Get a brief history of the new recruits and then go inside Industrial Light & Magic to see how they were designed and conceptualized for the film.

- The Finishing Touch: Watch Michael Bay work like you've never seen him before. The director connects virtually with his Santa Monica headquarters, visits the editing bay and then checks in on the visual effects house in San Francisco—all from the comfort of his Miami home office. Also, get an in-depth look at the music contributions of Imagine Dragons as they collaborate with the film's composer Steve Jablonsky. Finally, get exclusive red carpet access to the film's world premiere in Hong Kong.

- Just Another Giant Effin' Movie: Discover the fun, frenetic and amazing way a movie like Transformers: Age of Extinction gets made.

- A Spark of Design: Enjoy an exclusive look inside Hasbro's creation of TRANSFORMERS: Age of Extinction Stomp and Chomp Grimlock action figure from concept and development to sculpting and painting, and then ultimately to the assembly line.

- T.J. Miller: Farm Hippie: Actor/comedian T.J. Miller never imagined he'd be part of a massively successful franchise like Transformers so he sets off to personally thank the people who made it possible. Come along as he visits Bay Films, gets some pointers from Kelsey Grammer, and even stops by Mark Wahlberg's house in this funny piece.

- KRE-O TRANSFORMERS: Take Us Through the Movies!: OPTIMUS PRIME will bring you up to speed on all of the TRANSFORMERS movies one by one in this hilarious, animated short where the TRANSFORMERS KREON figures act out the movies while building and rebuilding each scene…brick by brick.

- The Angry Birds TRANSFORMERS: Origin Story: Bonus content tells the origin story of how the EggSpark has landed on Piggy Island causing the eggs on the island to turn into evil Egg-bots, wreaking havoc across the whole island. The EggSpark has also caused the Birds and Pigs to turn into Autobots and Deceptihogs, who must team up in order to stop the Egg-bots before it's too late!

Best Prices:

I did a price comparison on both the internet and this week’s circulars with Amazon.com, Best Buy, Bestbuy.com, BarnesandNoble.com, Costco.com (no listings for some reason), DeepDiscount.com, Frys.com, FYE, FYE.com, Kmart.com/Sears.com, Overstock.com, Rakuten.com, Target, Target.com, Toys R Us, ToysRUs.com and Walmart.com. Unless otherwise noted or known by me, the prices are the same in store and online at their respective websites. I noted shipping in the price rankings because of the competition between stores, but I will only be comparing base prices of the movie. Shipping costs will not factor into the price rankings as a result.

Please note that with these price rankings, these prices are as current as I am aware of. Walmart's in-store prices don't always match its website prices, for example. As a result, these prices are as accurate as I can verify from the internet and flyers from the newspaper, I don't put prices in the rankings that I cannot verify.

I fully expect there to be further price changes on Tuesday when the movie is released to stores. I’ll be updating this thread again on Tuesday and double-checking all the prices.

For example, in the past, Kmart.com/Sears.com will presumably sell all versions of a movie, but there are no listings for it online but only in Kmart's circular. So I can only rank the price at the store and not the price on the website. I also know from experience that FYE's B&M store prices are the same as those on their website, so I made one listing for both. In other words, these stores reserve the right to change their prices and I might not know about it. Smilie That's where the SD community can help each other out and if new or different prices are verified, I will edit my post accordingly.

A note about Walmart's prices, they have proven to be notoriously regional in the past. They rarely have a weekly circular available online. If there is one, and when it is available online, the circular prices in it are national or mostly national. Hopefully, the in-store prices will be national, with little price variation from their website. Wink

I’m making a slight adjustment to my price rankings, as I will now only include the top five prices in this thread. Basically, if a retailer’s price stinks, it doesn't get to be a part of this compilation list. Big Grin I will still do a full price comparison to all the stores I listed above, but only the best prices will be included here. So if you don’t see a particular store on the list, it means their price wasn’t good enough to be included. It also means that if their price isn't included here, you should go to a retailer whose price WAS included on this list and try to get the other retailer to price match it, if possible.

Here are the conclusions:

Don't forget that you can price match any edition of this DVD or Blu-Ray to the store of your choice, if they have a price matching policy. There might also be some store-specific coupons or online coupon codes floating around that could help bring some of these prices down further. Given the price competition for this movie, there are some great price-matching opportunities, especially due to the aggressive price matching policies stores like Best Buy and Target have continued since the previous holiday season.

__________________________________________________________________________

I included as much pertinent information on this new release that I could find so everyone can make a more educated decision on whether to purchase this movie or not, as well as which edition they prefer.

For those of you who read these threads start to finish, there is plenty of detail for everyone. I've noticed that a lot of the questions people put in these threads could be answered if they read the
OP carefully. I would heartily encourage you to do so, as it might answer the question(s) you have before you even have to ask. Wink

And that is the end of this loooooong compilation, my first New Release Thread for the year 2014. A TON of retailer exclusives this time around, making it more complicated and lengthier than the last one I did in 2013 for Man of Steel. Faint

Robot Remember, when you go into battle in the explosive finale, ride a gigantic Tyrannosaurus Rex robot and brandish a big sword, as this makes you look badass in the marketing materials. Robot

Future New Release Threads will include X-Men: Days of Future Past on Sunday, Oct. 12th and Guardians of the Galaxy later in the year on Sunday, Dec. 7th

For more information on previous New Release Threads for blockbuster DVD and Blu-Ray releases, please click here: hhttp://slickdeals.net/forums/sdsearch.php?mode=forum&searchuserid=410841&showposts=0&starteronly=1.

9/30/14 - PRICE UPDATE - I updated all of the prices now that the movie is now available for purchase. A list of the changes:

1.) The biggest change is now that Target.com is no longer offering the $5 Target gift card when you pre-order, this is no longer the best deal for the Three Disc DVD/Blu-ray + digital HD copy. That honor now goes to FYE/FYE.com & Kmart's B&M store.

2.) BarnesAndNoble.com raised their prices for all three editions so much they fell out of the top 5.

3.) Frys.com updated their prices and jumped into the top 5 for each edition. Most notably, it reached #2 for the Four Disc DVD/Blu-ray/3D Blu-Ray + digital HD Copy.

4.) Target.com now matches their in-store prices on their website now. This always happens on release day and was not unexpected.

5.) Walmart.com dropped their price of the Three Disc DVD/Blu-ray + digital HD copy by one dollar, to $18.96. It still ranks third in price for that edition but its now a little bit cheaper.

Some great price matching opportunities here with Best Buy and Target to match Amazon, Frys.com or Walmart.com!

That's all - happy hunting! Smilie
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

What's with the retailers not doing exclusives on 3D sets? Every exclusives are on 2D Blu-ray. I know what they are trying to do. They are trying to get the collectors to buy multiple copies of the same movie.

Michael Bay saw how Pacific Rim did everything right and tried to copy its success formula. Yeah, drive from Beijing to Hong Kong took less than 30 minutes. Time and time again Michael Bay assumed his audience are idiots. If you can believe that CIA would hunt down the autobots who had great relationships with the military, then the story is actually ok. I just wish more were done on the story with dinobots. They showed up in the last half an hour to chew up the enemies and took off. You can't count on Michael Bay for story-telling. Overall it's still better than Revenge of the Fallen.

Very impressive post. I've seen less work done on threads for entire categories of deals (TVs, laptops, etc.) for Black Friday. I hope enough people are interested in this for it to have been worth your while.

Looks like you did the same thing for Man of Steel last year. Again, very impressive. Glad to have you on SD.

I agree completely. But once the pre-order $5 bonus gift card ends on Tuesday once the movie comes out, people who missed out on that deal (or those who want a different edition, like the 3D Blu-Ray) will still want to get this movie and have no idea where the best deal is. At that point, I hope that this thread will prove to be helpful.

Nope, sorry, just an error in my post. I mislabeled the four disc as the three disc. Check #3 under the "Best Prices" category and you'll see that I corrected it earlier today.

No, sorry. I researched the special features on both the Blu-Ray and the 3D Blu-Ray and they are exactly the same except for what I already mentioned in the thread about the expanded images from the IMAX 3D version of the film.

I found the coupon, thank you for mentioning it! It is only for the exclusive Walmart Limited Edition of the three disc DVD/Blu-ray + digital HD copy Combo Pack Gift Set that comes with three "Transformers" PVC figurines. Prices tend to be regional, so YMMV on getting the same prices country-wide. I would love to know if their prices are nationwide when the movie comes out on Tuesday. Then the coupon will make the price that much sweeter. $24.96 minus the $5 coupon would make it $19.96, ranking it fifth place but with a bunch of extra goodies for the same price as the normal edition.

Too many exclusives on this one. Paramount got Greedy when it put out Star Trek Into Darkness last year and divided all the extras into different retailer exclusives. Paramount is clearly doing it again.
