Called TWC (Time Warner Cable - 800-892-2253) today to actually cancel and retensions offered me 12 month @ $34.99 for Extreme Internet. I was currently paying $44.99 for Standard in Queens, NY (after the twitter method failed to get me locked in for standard at another 12 months for a second year). Since I am in a TWC Maxx area, I will be getting triple speeds, so 200/20. I then called customer service and agent is mailing me a modem that can handle those speeds for free. I will be paying the $6 rental fee until I figure out if I want to shell out $125 for a modem.

The first rep knew the promo, but the call dropped before she finished putting it through. 2nd and 3rd reps insisted that the promo was only $44.99 for Extreme (normal is $54.99). Fourth rep was able to find it after 20 minutes looking through all of the promos on her screen. she said it was pretty close to the bottom of her offers.

Edit: Apparently you can get an additional al $5 off for 6 months. It will be extreme (200/20 in maxx area; 30/5 not) for 29.99 for 6 months and 34.99 for another 6 months, plus 5.99 for modem rental unless I decide to shell out $125 for my own retail modem. The rep (who called himself a field rep, going to events and recruitment spots) gave me his company cell number. Confirmed via email a few minutes later, so I have it in writing. He also seemed to hint that if I call him in 6 months, he would renew the extra 5 off for another 6 months. I would post his number, but I asked him if he wanted me to (they get paid partially on commission) but he said it would get him fired since they r only really supposed to go after their assigned accounts.

So you can call and cancel your account (even if it is a brand new account) and don't actually go to tw office to return the modem (as you would have to do since tw won't send someone just to pick up a modem and you can't mail them in) you may be assigned to a field retention rep who might be able to match my offer. Once you have their cell, you could easily repeat this strategy each year by actually cancelling with customer service and then calling them.

If you do not live in NYC, please try to see if you can get this price and report back success/failures in the Wiki.

The modem options are (based on my research, you need a modem that bonds 16x4 channels to fully utilize the 200 DL speeds):

Buy an Arris SB6183 from Amazon for $129 (3-4 week backorder)
Rent an Arris TG1672g (also has phone and wifi; can be put in bridge mode to use your own router) for $5.99/month
Rent an Arris DG1670a (combo unit with wifi; can be put in bridge mode to use your own router) for $5.99/month

Another option for anyone wanting to get back intop promo pricing with TWC after a promo expires can try the Twitter method: http://stopthecap.com/2012/03/01/...0-in-2012/ i have done this successfully for many friends. You direct-message them on twitter that you are looking for ways to save on your bill. you follow them. them will message you asking for your account/contact info. You get a call usually that day or within 3 days. Negotiate. These reps have even more power than retensions. I was turned down using this method on the second attempt on my account. That is why I initially was calling to cancel.

You literally have to schedule a disconnect date for the rep to be able to offer you any promo's. They are forced to tell you no promo's until you say you want to leave. For details:

The speed info is:

Outside of a TWC Maxx area
Standard ($34.99) - 15/1 (?)
Turbo ($44.99) - 20/2
Extreme ($54.99) - 30/5
Ultimate ($64.99) - 50/5

In a TWC Maxx area
Standard ($34.99) - 50/5
Turbo ($44.99) - 100/10
Extreme ($54.99) - 200-20
Ultimate ($64.99) - 300-20

FYI, this info is greatly contradicted by everything on TWC's site, but this is what I was told by multiple reps. I am in Queens, NY.

Even so, if you have Standard (or possibly even if you don't), you may want to try doing what I did. Maybe the areas that can get this promo can be extended to TX?

Could you save more money if you downgraded to Turbo? Maxx is 100/10 for Turbo, I think.

hmm i live in the queens nyc area and my rates are about to increase next week. This is interesting but I don't want to get into a contract since I am planning to move at the beginning of next year. Did you have to enter into a contract to lock into this price? Also, it seems TWC is the only cable provider, next to ATT broadband and earthlink, both charging me more for slower service- how did you negotiate, if at all?

thanks in advance for your help.

I believe that the only possible discount beyond 34.99 would be a YMMV "Costomer Loyalty" $5 off for 6 months. I know a few people who have gotten that.

I basically told them that FIOS was in my area and I wanted to try it out because of the faster speeds. She immediately offered me the $20 off Extreme for 12 months promo (very YMMV that it will be offered, as many other reps seem to not know about it, but were eventually able to find it when pushed). I would recommend saying that a friend in your area got it, and he told you his rep said it was almost at the bottom of the list of her available promos. Also, don't just hang up if you get turned down. Say you want to think about it and will call back. They keep records of your calls and they will see multiple hangups and I would think that would make it less likely to find a rep to help you.

I asked for the code (there always is always some sort of internal code) but she laughed and said "Now that would be naughty".

I would do exactly what I stated in this post and try to get this retensions offer for 34.99 for the same Extreme plan you have. I see no reason why they would be more willing to give it to a current Standard tier customer vs an Extreme tier. I think it will be up to, is it available in your area, and will you get a rep that will take the time and find it for you.

Here in SO CA I'm paying 57.99 for 15/1 and these greedy TWC don't want to cut me a deal.

I will try again tomorrow to see if they finally give me a break. I want to threat them to cancel but if I really cancel I have nowhere to go, just AT&T and hell no.

I'm paying $35 currently for 15/1 and I have paid as low as $30 before and up to $40. Definitely call retentions. Try what was posted above, if the deal isn't good, say you will think about it and call back again.

I second this. Just call retentions and ask if they have any promotions to offer. Take if you like what they offer or say you want more time to think.

Don't hangup. One time she put me on hold and came back with a better second offer.
