It means to use it with a Mac running OSX, youll first have to re-format the drive.

But seriously: the drive likely comes "pre-formated" with a windows friendly file system like "NTFS"

Macs use a different file system. Usually " HFS+"

All this means is that when you plug it in the first time, your Mac will have to "Format" the drive.

You will have to run the "Disk Utility" program on your Mac.
