This has a 1TB traditional hard disk with 8 GB SSD. I am not sure what the 8GB would hold though. Definitely not a modern operating system.

the 8gb SSD (if separate from the HD and not actually a SSHD) would be used most effectively as a cache drive using the Intel smart response technology, rather than as storage of its own

I have seen machines listed as, say 500gb hard drive and 8gb ssd, when it was really a 500gb sshd though

From WIKI: "Hybrid drives are storage devices that combine NAND flash solid-state drive (SSD) with hard disk drive (HDD) technology, with the intent of adding some of the speed of SSDs to the cost-effective storage capacity of traditional HDDs. The purpose of the SSD in a hybrid drive is to act as a cache for the data stored on the HDD, by keeping copies of the most frequently used data on the SSD for improved overall performance."

It has hyperthreading, at least so it still runs 4 (albeit weaker) threads. Something like a desktop i3.

Most games don't benefit all that much from more than 2 cores. Besides, you'll be held back by the M275 GPU way before you'll be held back by the CPU.

On a Mac yes, with Windows no so much.

Dual core i7.

Not an IPS screen for those that like a nice display.

Not the beefiest video card.

I really wanted a 14" gaming machine early this year and considered waiting for this to come out, but I went with a 15" Asus machine (n550jv) with a quad-core, nice IPS screen and decent speakers instead. Specs on the y40 were a disappointment and no IPS screen was the final nail in the coffin to me. I think I'd almost rather buy the last-gen Y410p (albeit a heavier machine).

that makes no sense. unless you need tons of storage the 256GB ssd is a much better option.

After switching solely to SSDs, I can say that they're a much better experience. If I need more storage, then I'd buy an extra SSD (did that) or external storage (did that too).
