FINAL UPDATE: Lots of info in this please read it before asking questions...the system is dead simple and almost any question you could ask has been answered here or in the manual or on the Amazon reviews.

UPDATE #2: I just got off the phone with their customer support.

Here's what I was told: CAN use your own SIM card...any GSM card will work AFTER the 31st of December. What is going to happen is any device that is activated prior to the 31st on their site will be sent a PIN unlock code to the device on the 31st which will deactivate the existing SIM but unlock the unit itself. At that point Customer Care said you can use any GSM sim card in the unit. The programming will remain, and functionality will be restored. They said it's basically like unlocking a phone is what they are going to do so that it can function with any GSM sim at that point.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: According to THIS PDF ON THE OEM's WEBSITE the service/support/warranty will expire at the end of this month. No wonder they were so CHEAP! However, it appears that some are thinking that the unit might still function fine with a different SIM card in it OR that it will always function as just a local alarm (siren only). I'm going to order one of the cheap SIM cards on Amazon and add some cash to it and see if the unit still functions or not with SMS messaging. I'm also curious if I could potentially just call T-Mobile and reactivate the SIM card that comes with the unit...

I searched and didn't find anything here on Slickdeals for this one...I just ordered this so I can't review it or speak to it other than the 2 hours of research I've done online about it. Reviews look decent enough at 4 out of 5 stars.
SAM Security C5 Self-Activated Monitoring System
List Price: $199.99
Price: $11.99

(Next closest price I could find reputable was $29.99 for the system and 1 expansion kit from Rakuten, so still a better deal, and compared to other DIY security systems a smoking hot deal if it works well enough)

Details on the system here:

What's Inside the Box?

1 - Wireless Keypad Control
1 - PIR motion detector
1 - Door/window sensor
2 - remote controls
2 - rfid keyfobs
1 - ac/dc adapter
2 - standby batteries

The system also comes with a $25 prepaid T-Mobile SIM Card, which is how the system is both programmed and sends alerts via SMS text to your cell phone.

Quote :
SAM C5 comes with a promotional $25 credit for SMS and/or Voice. Based on an average of 2 SMS' per day you should get approximately 5 month's usage and 60 minutes of Voice available to call out and to alert user of security events and allows for listen-in functionality. When $25 credit is depleted to $5, you will be notified to refill online at You may get less or more than 5 months' usage depending on your SMS and Voice usage.
There also appears to be an Android app:

Video about the system:

I also ordered 2 of the Expansion Kit:
SAM Self Activated Monitoring Expansion Kit
List Price: $99.99
Price: $9.99 Free Shipping for Prime Members
You Save: $90.00 (90%)

EDIT: if sold out on Amazon it looks like has the expansion kit even cheaper at 11 cents plus $6 shipping!

I have been searching lately for a simple home security system that didn't require a monthly monitoring fee. Most do and those that don't typically cost between $100-300 and use either an internet connection or a home landline.

To my surprise I found this one and while I just ordered it I figured other Slickdealers might want to try it out too. For the price and fact that it's fulfilled by Amazon so easy returns etc...can't really go wrong to try it out. And the reviews are decent enough.

I figure if I hate's going back easy enough. If I like it, it'll cost all of $30 hardware and around $25 a YEAR to have it send me alerts. I'm going to be pairing the system with a few Foscam cameras as well so that I can also see what's happening on my phone if the system sends me an alert.

SIDE idea: while you have to activate the SIM card through them, I wonder if you could also just pull it out afterwards and use it in a T-Mobile prepaid phone? Just a thought.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

NO the unit wont' brick.. NO you shouldn't return it, you should keep it!

YOu may also want to check out the android app TASKER and also google voice.

The sleep feature of the motion sensor is a battery saving feature! it is not a bug. think about it. appreciate it!

These are made by a Chinese manufacturer Chuango
Inside circuit boards have Chuango logo.

There is a SAM C5 App [] for Android.
For iOS try G5 Alarm app [] from Chuango (works well for basic operations, syntax of some settings vary slightly). All apps make use of SMS.

There is a more detailed manual [] on some Dutch site.

On the backside there are terminals to input wired sensors (for those with older wired sensors already installed) and output an electronic lock []. These can be potentially used to interface the system with some other smart thingie like an Arduino or Raspberry-Pi or motion ip cam.

List of confirmed working non-SAM accessories:

Wireless Water/Leak detector:

Woah, I wonder why it's so cheap. Did they go out of business?

Not according to their website and latest reviews on Amazon. Apparently even if they do you can still reload the sim card itself, nothing is done via them other than tech support and I guess warranty returns. For me, it's worth at least trying out for the price. It also appears the system itself is the same as a few other branded ones, Chuango G5 and Miguard it's likely just a cheap system with a Radio Shack inspired front end website for marketing purposes. But again I can always send it back to Amazon if it sucks.

Strange looking product, but they're all over eBay for not much more than this price. $199 list is obviously crazy. For $12, it's almost worth buying just to tinker with.

Yeah, the price vs. other sites isn't stellar. But since a search here on SD didn't find the product at all, I figured it was worth at least telling folks about if they are interested in finding a mega-cheap security solution that seems to actually work based on the reviews.

Stupid question... But can this be used on other mobile devices like Metro or AT&T?

Hum. Are the sensors zwave or zigbee radios? That would make this a super slick deal...

I was just looking, not z-wave. 315Mhz for this system.

If zwave compatible would be very slick. Someone familiar please chime in. For under $22 kit plus expansion worth to tinker with unless it's pure crap. Keeping fingers crossed. Thanks, op.

good deal but the seller description "...Sold by National Liquidation and Fulfilled by Amazon" is kind of troubling... [] shows that they sell primarily thro Radio Shack. here is the WHOIS info on the site:

Registrant Organization:
Registrant Street: 12808 Gran Bay Parkway West
Registrant City: Jacksonville
Registrant State/Province: FL
Registrant Postal Code: 32258
Registrant Country: US
Registrant Phone: +1.5707088780

No actual monitoring from a company... This seems somewhat useless.

Not sure if you're joking or not. Companies don't monitor anything. They charge you per month to receive the notification from the system and then notify you or the police. This cuts them out and notifies you directly.
