Was holding out for M550..is there a big difference between the 2 models? Also price seems little high compared to recent deals?

M550 is faster, but is it noticeably faster? That's something only your usage patterns and hardware can say. UserBenchmark [userbenchmark.com] says the M500 is about 20% slower for most things. You also have to accept that you're looking at a budget "pro" SSD with the M550 vs a budget consumer with the M500 or M100.

I'm glad I took the time to answer this one, because now I'm on the hunt for a deal on the M550 Cool Using Visa Checkout and coupons.com for TD I can only get the M550 512GB [tigerdirect.com] down to $199, that's $30 more for 20% more performance. That may be good enough.

It's not a bad deal for a 512GB drive (most deals coming up lately have been for 256/128GB drives). The OCZ ARC 100 480GB (post-Toshiba acquisition OCZ drive) at $150 is a comparable drive at a lower price ($.31/GB vs $.33/GB).

I have to say that the MX100 is still my recommendation for most people because the feature set and value are just amazing, but the ARC 100 is a compelling alternative for desktop users. The better performance consistency makes the ARC 100 more suitable for heavier workloads, so for a user with a heavy-ish IO workload and a tight budget the ARC 100 is a great option.
The PNY Optima 480GB is available for $120, but it's not comparable in terms of quality (much older, mixed controllers, poor user reviews, etc.).

I'd get the arc, but that extra 30gb is enough space for a game lol

Just to help some of you compare or make a decision, the Crucial m500 480GB(an older & lesser model in terms of performance) was $160 on Amazon's black friday.
