During the 1-14-2015 Direct, Nintendo announced that Wii games would be coming directly to the eShop and that the first 3, Mario Galaxy 2, Punch Out (Wii), and Metroid Prime Trilogy, would be 50% off for a limited time. Apparently that means they will be $9.99, which is considerably cheaper than a physical copy, surprisingly (darn Nintendo games holding their value).

Punch Out - January 22
Metroid Prime Trilogy - January 29

These games still use the "Wii Mode" sandbox, so it's identical to launching the Wii disc from the Wii U menu (except that it skips the Wii home screen). Wii remote and nunchuk are required, as well as a sensor bar. Saved data will work across both disc and digital versions. Miiverse and other Wii U features do not work with Wii games.

You do not need to own a Wii U or have a Nintendo Network ID to purchase the game. Physical access to a Wii U is not required for purchase. You can directly access web-based check out and purchase as a guest using this link [nintendo.com]. A download code will be provided on the order confirmation page and sent to your e-mail. You can gift the code to someone that owns a Wii U, or if you are pre-purchasing in anticipation of buying your own Wii U, you can enter the code in the eShop app when you have the system.

Thanks for the headsup! Been wanting to get Super Mario Galaxy 2, but haven't wanted to fork out the price for the physical disc.

You would have to purchase through the eShop. I just linked the official Nintendo page because they don't really have a browser based store like PSN or XBL. You can buy some of their games through their online portal, but I believe that function is in beta and isn't supported on all their digital games just yet.

You can purchase from your console though. The game should be available now.

If you think that price is tough to take, take a look at what Punch-Out and Metroid Prime Trilogy have been going for! I've sulked off and on for years looking at MPT prices and thinking I should have just bought it when it came out. Now I can actually play through the trilogy again without hating myself for getting gouged.

So now we can get wii games through wii u without going into wii mode? Or does this still boot into wii mode?

If it is wii games through wii u, interesting that they can do that but can't bring N64 games to Wii U...

I can not thumbs up this enough. So long insanely overpriced eBay market for Metroid Prime Trilogy!

I have a physical copy of Galaxy 2, but I might just ebay it now and take the $10 digital copy given I could turn a profit given the sale price being between $30-$40.

This does not boot into Wii U mode. Nintendo was very specific in that regard. It isn't uprezz'd or anything, but it is running on your Wii U without booting into Wii mode. Which I guess means you can hit the home button freely and all that jazz.

Correct. It is being emulated instead of run in Wii mode. Convenience + Price. Woot
