Thread Details

I know this is not a hot deal but its a hot news...

We all probably know that sooner or later Radioshack would be filing for bankruptcy but now its official that they are preparing for it and would file it early next month (or may be sooner).

When a store goes bankrupt, their gift cards, store credits also become worthless unless they can get an arrangement from court to honor those.

If you have any gift cards its time to redeem them. I had one GC from last year's iPad deal which I just redeemed few days ago.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

Fully confirmed

Struggling electronics retailer RadioShack has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and says it will sell up to 2,400 stores.

The Fort Worth, Texas company said Thursday that it was also having discussions to sell all of its remaining assets.

I don't even know how RadioShack lasted this long. What exactly has been their appeal over the years? Whenever I'm shopping for something technology related I usually just go to Best Buy.

I used them for convenient pickup of common parts (resistors, diodes, etc) to repair circuit boards on arcade and pinball machines when I didn't have the part or didn't want to wait for an online order, but they've even DRASTICALLY cut back that area of the store over the last few years, so I have literally no reason to go there anymore.

I do wonder if Radio Shack embraced their hobbyist roots, went more the do-it-yourself electronic type of shop, perhaps included more computer kits/parts (ie New Egg-ish), if they would have done much better than the route they did take.

Instead they tried to compete with Best Buy, I guess, or cell phone stores, just with much worse pricing/less of a selection. Not to mention that if they did have anything you'd possibly want, it'd be like double the price of anywhere else. It probably didn't help that it took like 40 min. to walk in and buy a set of batteries, after the clerk tried to take every bit of personal info, address, phone numbers, etc that he could. It's been years since I shopped in Radio Shack, but I recall the last time I did (for a $5 cable), that it felt like I was applying for a loan application or something.

I honestly thought KMart/Sears would go before Radio Shack did. At least Radio Shack had certain electronics parts that were hard to find elsewhere.

Unfortunately it's difficult to sustain a chain of stores with the hobbyist mentality. There just isn't enough money in it unless you upcharge a lot, at which point the internet destroys you.

Kinda sad IMHO. As someone else stated they sold some stuff that was impossible to find at any other B&M retail store. If you do AV or electronics it was really handy sometimes to have one nearby.

So few people have the skills to fix stuff anymore--Radio Shack going bankrupt is partially a reflection of that. It started out literally as a store for people who built/repaired their own ham radios. We just live in different times now. Most broken electronics get trashed or traded-in for this year's model.
