Outside of the event, PAX South weekend has big incentives for existing and new players alike to jump in and play Guild Wars 2. The game will be on sale for 75 percent off all weekend. At $9.99 for the base edition, this is the biggest sale for one of the most critically-acclaimed games of all time, and a steal for a MMO that doesn't charge subscription fees. The 75 percent off discount applies to all editions of the game purchased through buy.guildwars2.com from 8:00 a.m. PST on Saturday, January 24 through 11:59 p.m. PST on Sunday, January 25.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

No, it's an MMO with many key bindings for spells and movement. You could hack up control via controller but you would be pretty restricted. This isn't a frost mage from WoW.

Wanted to try this game but keep missing their free trial periods. Didn't want to pay the $20 it's always on sale for. I'd try it for $10 though. Thanks for the post!

Hey folks, I'm the guy that always posts NOT TO BUY GW2. Click on my name. See my past posts. All the problems I've posted about before are still there. (Well, the AH has been significantly improved.)

But for $10, even I have to say "JUST BUY IT". You spend more than that on a Humble Bundle [humblebundle.com] or coffee at starbucks.

Just understand what you are getting into: These folks make bank off their gem store. You are buying a catalog!

No, you do not need to buy gems for $$ from wherever (BestBuy, GameStop, online). But, trust me, you will want to.

Speaking of which, **IF** Arenanet chooses to offer the triple-pack of unlimited gathering tools that includes the watchwork mining pick [guildwars2.com] again over this weekend, and they likely won't, I've only ever seen the 3-pack sold once before, and then it was gone before I could buy it, but if they do, my suggestion to you is that you shell out another $25 (for 2000 gems) and buy the 3-pack of gathering tools from the in-game gem store. Normally those unlimited gathering tools are 1000 gems apiece. 1000 gems is roughly (very roughly - the exchange rate fluctuates like the Dow Jones stock market index [gw2spidy.com]) equal to 150 gold (well, as of noon today). 1 gold = 100 silver. 1 silver = 100 copper. Good luck.

Be aware that nearly everything you find is sold, or broken down into mats and then sold, and you buy what you want with the proceeds. There is this constant incremental MINUSCULE movement towards goals. It's like earning a per-hour salary and saving up for a car. Case in point: Halloween candy corn, where the wings folks wanted cost 100,000 candy corn. You could never hope to collect that many. But if you did, the Candy Corn was worth vastly more on the AH than the wings, which also dropped from mobs, and were being sold for far less. In Winterfest, the gift bags turned out to be worth twice as much on the AH as what they contained, and they couldn't really be traded for anything useful. The new daily rewards, where you log in for 28 days and get a prize, it turns out boring old laurels have the most reliable best payout [reddit.com]. So you get the laurels, change them to mats, sell the mats, and buy whatever you actually wanted. The game is weird that way.

There's a lot of stuff like that. You should read http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/. They're a bit cynical, an attitude that's a bit necessary with GW2, and extremely helpful!

In particular, you should read:

http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2t5d30/hi_i_just_bought_guild_wars_2_does_anyone_have/ [reddit.com]

http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2svt2g/why_is_candy_corn_suddenly_taking_off_in_price/ [reddit.com]

Especially read those last two! Yes, market manipulation via reddit (et al) is surprisingly easy.

If you are interested in Daily's, you should read up on the carebear-style "farming" PvP rooms where it's considered a serious faux pas to harm another player. Folks are just peacefully farming the PvP rewards for pvp-track-progress & dailys. It's the funniest thing I've ever seen, and apparently Arenanet tolerates folks playing "oddly" in PvP [guildwars2.com].

One last thing: If you go into the game options, you can turn the personal-story off, and your little compass indicator will point to your nearest event/heart/waypoint/etc. THAT IS SO HELPFUL! Under "General Options" (the wrench), "User Interface", "Content Guide", set it to "Disable Personal Story". While your at it, under "Control Options" (the mouse), at the bottom, in "Miscellaneous", see what key you've bound "AoE Loot" to. (And "Interact" to).
