Home Depot is matching Lowe's program of 5% off when you pay with your store credit card. There was a barcode at the register that the clerk scanned. The HD stores around here are usually pretty stingy, so maybe this is company wide, but as usual, YMMV, and you may have to ask for the discount. Hopefully this will help someone.

I searched 'home depot' back over a year and didn't find this, so I hope it's not old news.

FYI: You need to have a Lowes credit card in your name. When I request the 5% match, the clerk asks to see my Lowe's credit card. Not sure if all HD stores ask but make sure you have the card handy or they may not match. I have been getting the match since last year and it's awesome that HD offers it.

I use the 5% off whenever I do not want to defer the payments of larger purchases. All Home Depots I have tried do not even ask for the Lowes Credit Card. I just have to ask for the 5% off every time I check out. No questions asked. 5% off on every purchase will add up!

The secret word is to ask for the "competitor discount" - that's the phrase I was told to use by an HD employee. Since with the Lowe's card you get 5% off purchases, but there is no benefit to the Home Depot card.

I've never been asked to show a Lowe's card (don't have one, and I don't mention Lowe's specifically).

I think you have to use your HD credit card to get the 5% Lowes match discount and ask at the cash register when checking out. (May be "in store only too," i suspect.) This according to Jon at HD Chat today. "It will knock you out of any of the deferred interest offers," (such as the No Interest 12 Months Offer they have going through November 30 that i was using when i ordered online today) Jon advised. Jon was well aware of the 5% off credit offer, but "Jon HD Chat" referred me back to the website for more details when pressed. And since time was short, i ended my chat. Later, now at the website, i find nothing when i enter what Jon confirmed in our chat. So, I googled: "Home depot 5% off credit offer" and that brot me to slickdeals blog. Thank you Slick Deals. Seems as if there is a lot of confusion over the offer among consumers and also at the checkout. No one at HD wants to go on record at corporate. We are just at the mercy of "The Man," capital (man) that is. Hope you don't mind but i will go back and link this blog to the HD credit website where "Jon HD Chat" said i get more info about the 5% off credit offer. Target have been using 5% off credit offer with their Red Card for years now -- it must be successful and they promote their discount. Make sense to me.

They have been doing 5% on the commercial card for the last year or more ( if you ask for it).
Only been asked for a Lowes card once in the last 100+ transactions.

In the store, I ask for the 5% offer and get asked for my lowe's card every time. I have one, but I carry so many cards and never go to lowes, so I pretty much never have it... Online, I use my chase freedom card that has 3% cash back at HD. I usually have my CF card with me and use it any time I'm at HD and they refuse to let me use the 5%. Sometimes they won't if I'm trying to stack discounts.

How can you save 5% discount when you purchase online and pay with homedepot credit card? I am always given 5% at the store but I was not able to get it online?

I was told yesterday when I asked for the 5% HD CC discount that they were discontinuing the discount in the next couple of weeks.

Upon be informed I replied "Guess I do all my shopping at Lowes from now on!" To which she told me Lowes is discontinuing it as well.

Of course I'm now totally depressed at this news. I got a whole lot of projects planned this year!

A few minutes of googling I could find no confirmation. Anyone else heard anything like this?

I just saw a newer Lowes 5% discount commercial last night so not sure how valid that information is. As we all know most individual store employees know nothing regarding anything lol

We have been offering the 5% lowes match for several years now. Technically the person needs to have a Lowe's care but none of us check, you just have to ask for it, and if you qualify for deferred billing on your Home Depot card (on purchases over $299 automatically) and we give you 5% you lose your deferred. It is correct that on January 25th we will no longer be offering the match. Consumers will now receive 1 year hassle free returns on their home depot consumer card instead of only having 90 days to return to their home depot card. Contractors will receiving 60 days to pay on their Home Depot commercial card instead of the 5% and a new fuel program similar to other major fuel points programs for discounts at the pump.

Good info! Not happy but thanks.

I was told today that at the end of this month they will not be matching the 5% anymore.

Yes, also notified that HD 5% matching is over as of Jan 25, 2016. Sent off email to customer service through the HD website and received a verification response this is happening. Suggesting ALL HD cc holders flood cus service email. Lowes is NOT discontinuing (at least nothing public yet) the discount.
Note, looks like they did the same thing back in 2013. Tell everyone you know to send an email, it may change their minds.

They told me they would offer 10% lower price match from lowes. Not sure how it works exactly but she said if you bring in a ad they will give you a better price. Maybe they have always done this. I don't know. Wonder if it works for online prices.
