Your alert triggered a match for a merchant which requires action on your account

tengen 267 708 February 3, 2015 at 09:11 PM
In all my years using SD, this has never popped up. What's this?

I haven't added any new merchants or alerts outside of those giveaways, and they're usually the same ones like REI, etc.

Hello Slickdealers,

Many of you have asked about the new feature we rolled out that sent you an email asking for your Zip Code. Here's the scoop. Yesterday we made an improvement to the Deal Alerts feature. We can now send alerts for a broader set of retailers by collecting your ZIP Code. We've seen that you have a few questions about why we're doing this and we've answered them below.

1) Why does Slickdeals need my ZIP Code?
We're asking for ZIP Codes so that we can verify that we're properly sending alerts to users in states where certain sales tax laws are in place. Laws vary from state to state, however certain states' sales tax laws may deem deal alerts as potentially triggering tax nexus for certain retailers such that the retailers could potentially be required to collect sales tax from consumers in those states. By collecting ZIP Codes, Slickdeals is now able to restore alerts for retailers that we were previously forced to suppress.

2) Do I have to provide my ZIP Code? Will I get fewer alerts if I provide my ZIP Code?
No and No. In fact, by providing your ZIP Code you will most likely receive more, and in no case fewer, relevant alerts.

3) How will I know if Slickdeals needs my ZIP Code?
If we need to know your ZIP Code we'll let you know. We put a logic in place so that we only ask for your Zip Code if an alert in your account requires it, in which case we'll send you an email asking you for this information. Additionally, if you choose, you may at any time provide or update this information in your profile settings.

4) Will Slickdeals share my ZIP Code?
Your ZIP Code is not displayed publicly on our website and we only use it in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

5) Will I need to provide my ZIP Code ever again?
Once you enter this information you won't be asked for it again. If you ever wish to update your ZIP Code (e.g., if you've moved), you can always make that change in your profile settings.

here is the full email Your alert triggered a match for a merchant which requires action on your account

andriykoua,

Due to certain state sales tax laws, we're unable to send notifications for some stores to users who reside in a state where these laws are in effect. Please click the button below to go to Slickdeals and provide your ZIP code so we can verify whether you're eligible to receive alerts for these merchants.

Same here, I would like to know in detail which merchants require this.

Trader Joe's was sued for collecting zip codes.

+1 received at 23:42 CST -- at first glance it sounded like a phishing-type email, but it all links here.

If it is legit and not some kinda odd error or social experiment, I'd like to see citations of the supposed sales tax laws that would inhibit free speech. I'm guessing an overzealous state employee misread some section of law and sent SD a demand that they are complying with for who-knows-what reason.

It's a completely fruitless pursuit, as there are people who have multiple residences, others who would answer intentionally wrong, and/or refuse to answer to preserve tiny bits of anonymity out here in the wild. Definitely more information required from SD on this.

I got this message too. Also wondering which merchant triggered this. And why does my zip code matter in regard to which slickdeals threads I'm notified about?

I got this e-mail too. Too generic. Can someone tell us which state zip code we can use so that we can get our deal alerts? Could you maybe add something like showing which states don't allow which deal alerts. Then I will give you my "zip code".

If SD's going to do this and block DAs based on ZIPs, I'd like to know what retailers are requesting/forcing this. The only one I know was the whole debacle over TD and I don't have them as a DA right now, so either one of my current DAs is now flagging or they're just preemptively asking for everyone to fill in their ZIPs.

An early morning e-mail response indicated it is a legitimate message and that it is something new.
===

It sounds phishy to me too--I copied what I tried to do here:
Hi,
I got an e-mail message that looks like it is from slickdeals alerts that says,
Due to certain state sales tax laws, we're unable to send notifications for some stores to users who reside in a state where these laws are in effect.

I did a search on the FAQs for this sentence, but it didn't find a post with it.

I tried to send this message from http://slickdeals.net/forums/sendmessage.php?do=docontactus

but the 'response' was Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.
