i recently requested sprint to unlock my iphones thinking it was just for international unlock.
but what was weird is that before when i have unlocked an iphone for international use they usually ask me to activate the iphone on my account for 14 days then request the unlock.
this time the chat rep at the sprint international dept, said she was going to request an unlock for an inactive device and didn't need to put it on my account. She just asked that the iphone had to have been previously activated on a sprint account and in good standing and the request would take 5-7 business days to do. so i got an email for both iphones in 7 days.

to make the long story short i restored both iPhones and just for the hell of it put it sim cards from local carriers and they worked, so sprint has started to unlock iphones earlier than they said they would with was 2/11/2015
i have taken pictures of both my 4s and 5 sprint iPhones as proof

So this is a HUGE YMMV, and it certainly is a giant negative ghost rider when it comes to your title!

That being said, good for you on getting your phones unlocked Smilie

You just "restored both iPhones" and they became unlocked?

Its been awhile since I've seen it too. I know Ghost Rider was a character but I don't understand how it applies.

negative ghost rider - as in "That's a negative Ghost Rider" - is a phrase to signify 'Nope' for the generation I'm from Wink

So me saying the title is a big negative ghost rider is saying the title is a big nope - Sprint is NOT unlocking **ANY** carrier's phones, just select ones...

The title is a big nope due to the incorrectness of it hug

A comma would have made that much easier to understand. "That's a negative, Ghost Rider" makes a lot more sense.

Anyway - this is a huge YMMV but possible. When speaking with the new sales department at Sprint they will yes you to death. Call in with a bad ESN phone and they will say sure no problem we can activate that just trying to get you to agree to have them run your credit.

They won't do anything without you giving them your social. The point is to get you in the door and your credit run for them to turn around and say "oh no the device you have can't be used but we can give you an iPhone 5c for only $24.95 per month for 24 months."

Everything with Sprint is a short term gimmick to try and gain market share back.

I think this might have to do something with the deadline to comply with the unlocking law which states that service providers need to provide a method of unlock if the device is paid for and out of contract. I think the deadline is Feb 11th or something like that.
