Thread Details

The intent of this thread is for users, both new and not-so-new, to ask questions, and help with tips/advice. This is not by any means the "gospel". Please feel free to add your words of wisdom, and if you have questions, just ask! If you have a tip that will make sweeping easier for folks, please feel free to share. This is a community effort. We all will benefit in some way.

The Basic Advice/Tips for the new-to-sweeping folks.
Enter for the items you want/need. If you have no interest in trips, avoid the sweeps where the only prize is a trip. If you know you can't afford the tax on a new vehicle, avoid entering for those.

Set up folders in your bookmark/favorites. Create a separate one for each month, and file any sweeps you are interested in into the folder corresponding with when it ends. Then, if you have a day where you're pressed for time, enter at least the ones ending that day.

Play the instant win games.

Follow the rules! If a sweep is restricted to only females, a certain age group, certain states, etc, make sure you fit the criteria! If you don't, move on to another sweep that you do qualify for. Do not create a bunch of email addresses so you can enter something more than once, or so you can play an Instant win game more. The Sponsors can tell, and will DQ you. You're better off playing by the rules than cheating and getting disqualified and having NO entries.

Don't immediately dismiss essay required sweeps (or recipes, photos, etc)....well, unless you know you don't want to write something. A lot of people pass on them, so you might have a better shot at winning something.

Don't expect this to be lucrative enough to become a job. Yes, a lot of us win, and often, but not nearly enough to quit a job!

Expect things to go slow at first. It takes a while for the wins to roll in. But once they do...look out!

Expect to occasionally hit a dry spell. It happens to ALL of us.

DEFINITELY USE YOUR REAL INFO! If you use a fake phone number, and a sponsor is calling to notify people of wins, you'll never know what you missed out on. I, and many others, have been doing this for a long time, and we have no problems with sales calls. Also, use your real name. If your name is Robert or Catherine, using Bob or Cathy is ok, as they are known acceptable shorter versions of that name. if your name is Matilda, and you go by Fluffy, don't use Fluffy. Looking at your ID to get an affy notarized, they may reject it because the names don't match. The sponsor may also say "Fluffy won, not Matilda". So stick with using your real name, or something close to it.

Most of all, HAVE FUN! And don't be afraid to ask questions. We were all new to this at one time. Any one of us would be happy to answer questions.

For easy form filling, check out Roboform [roboform.com]. Google Tool bar and the autofill feature on IE also work well.

For Mac users, the best form filler is 1Password: http://agilewebsolutions.com/products/1Password (thanks javaFlower!)

FireFox Form Filler browser extensions: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/...ll&cat=all

To set up the autofill feature in IE: Click on Tools, then internet options, then choose 'content'. When that pops up, click on "Autocomplete", and make sure to check the boxes for forms and passwords on forms. This is not a good idea if you are on a shared/public computer!

I got a call that just beeped a couple of times. Looked up the number and it was something along those lines. Not legitimate. Blocked it in Google Voice.
Yes! But it's my fault. It's a contest that was posted here or on Sweepstakes Advantage. I asked them to remove me from their list

This happened to me on twitter twice. Got a message I won. Yet I could not DM them because they weren't following me. So I replied to their tweet. Eventually they read it and sent me my prizes. But I did not go insane sending them messages. I only replied once.

Just got a message I won a daily prize in the #HP this is touch sweepstakes. I looked up the rules and a daily prize is a mouse. :-(
Pretty sure you won a laptop. The mouse was if they only got100 Retweets. They got over 300 everyday.

Why is this thread still always at the bottom of the first page of this forum?:

Same for me! I had it stickied before it started, but unstickied right after I entered, I also have another one stuck down there with it - the Ellen's Flurry of Giveaways. I think I am going to try the ignore thread option to see if they will go away
What I did after reading someone elses response on this was to go to the post and repeat the sticky then unsticky. That worked.

I think I was just had on Twitter. Here is the link: https://twitter.com/jinudokipo and when you click on the link a website opens up with a form to fill out for what looked like a promo company. I entered my information including phone number and it then went nuts and I got all sorts of screens. Then I got a phone call from a New York number, no one was on the other line just beeps. They are really gutsy using NFL Fan Pass. Anyone more experienced with Twitter to tell me how to handle this.

Those that won a republic bike from the wonka contest, have you received the email from republic bike with the code to use? My nephew didn't, eprize told him to call republic bikes. Republic bikes said they had a glitch and some people did not receive the code, and of course they can't find his name as a winner, so they are checking further
Received mine from the company the second week of January.

Just a reminder to the newer sweepers to keep good records of Actual Value of prizes. I just requested that a corrected 1099-Misc be issued

The amount on the 1099 was the estimated prize value ($12186.00) while the actual value was (based on market price at the time was far less ( $3726.00)

The administrator agreed and the correction is in process
Thanks for this. I wouldn't know to do this otherwise. Much appreciated!

Nothing is broken down on 1099. Just a total

The best way to track the price is to get your own comparables at the time. This way you can establish Fair Market Value (FMV) The reason is the we all know that most things don;t have "one" price/. Hotels, airlines, events, we all know that there is everything from full retail to deep discount.

If you didn'tt collect the evidence at the time, then you can ask the administrator to check their records, but you will likely have to use whatever they provide

Here's more http://contests.about.com/od/taxe...VvsARV.htm Whatever you decide to do, good documentation to prove your point is essentiaj
thank you.

I have a question for the sweepers who have been long time "blog" sweepers..do you find that since Rafflecopter was introduced that your wins have gone down. I used to win something once a week to two weeks on average. But I have only won once from a Rafflecopter contest since they started being the majority on blog giveaways. I don't spend quite as much time as I used to but I do spend enough time to warrant a win sometime! Just wondering if it was just bad luck or that I'm entering the wrong way.
Also how many of you who do enter blog giveaways are SICK of having to like a bajillion facebook pages just to get entries!?

I got that DM a few weeks ago (1/15) and replied immediately. After not hearing back from them, I DMed and tweeted asking if they'd received it (about 2 days later); they assured me they had received it, but that it would take time for the prize department to get to it. They didn't ask for my ID in the initial DM, but I provided it anyway. Just left me feeling odd.

Those rules were difficult to understand and at first I thought I won a laptop. But then I went back and read and reread and came to the conclusion I won a mouse. I hate that they didn't tell me what I won.

Same experience here. Nothing on rafflecopter. I'm giving up and cleaning up all the facebook likes.

I don't enter for many of the small giveaways on blogs (not worth the time usually in my opinion) so I wouldn't expect too many wins anyway. I have a decent number of blog wins though since Rafflecopter came around. I still prefer the rafflecopter ones though since it makes it a lot easier to enter. Some of the blogs were getting ridiculous before rafflecopter requiring you to make like 10 posts per facebook like entry just so they could artificially inflate the number of comments they were getting on their blog.

I think the bigger issue than rafflecopter is that a lot of the bigger prizes are just one winner across a lot of different blogs. When the same rafflecopter is posted across 10 or more blogs, it gets hundreds of thousands of entries and ruins everyone's chances.
