I thought the 2015 newer ones are that price

I would go with newer one some 2014 have screen problems

Wondering if someone will figure out how to enable the new force touch functionality for the old touchpad. I use tap to click, so the actual physical click could be interpreted as a force touch and do the appropriate actions.

I like that idea. I use a physical click very, very rarely. Only when dragging a window from one area to the other. For everything else like clicking links or closing a browser, I always use a tap.

I wish that were the case but this is an Apple product. I don't know that price will drop much more than this.

I have a mid-2012 MBP that I'm fighting hard not to replace with one of these.
