New Slickdeals m. (mobile web) Site Launching - All You Need to Know!

jeffyskate 370 62 April 7, 2015 at 03:59 PM
Hi Guys -

Slickdeals m. experience (http://m.slickdeals.net) is about to get a new and improved look! This look is already live at http://slickdeals.net - accessible through any mobile device (excluding tablet). (If you go to http://slickdeals.net and see the desktop site, you may have to scroll to the footer and select 'Mobile Redesign' to see the new experience.)

We will being redirecting the m. site to the new mobile web experience in the coming weeks and wanted to get your feedback first . So please, tell us what you like and don't like about the new experience - we are listening!

No seriously, we are. So far we have implemented the following based on your recent feedback:

Vertical Height of Deal Cells
We worked a lot since your initial feedback at making the deal cells small enough vertically to fit as many deals onto the page as we could. The cell height is nearly identical to the m. experience.

Ability to Edit Post
We added the ability to edit a post to the new experience and will be adding many additional forum features like sending a PM, etc.

Ability to Sort Forums
You can sort by Latest Post, Replies, or Thread Started.

Basic HTML
Some of you old school users still like Basic HTML - so we kept it!

Page Speed Improvements
The Slickdeals team has worked really hard at optimizing the speed of our pages so that you get your deals and forums on any device through (almost) any connection. We've done a lot of tinkering under the hood to streamline the site.

This last improvement gets a bit at WHY we are changing the m. we know and love. The reason is that we want to continue to improve Slickdeal's mobile web experience and give you all the features you want and have asked for. In order to do that, we need one, single mobile web destination. Makes sense, I hope.

I've created a Slickdeals Mobile Web FAQ that explains the essential features of the new mobile web.

Mobile Web FAQ

By mobile, do you mean tablets?
No. We felt that the desktop site looks great on a tablet and didn't see any reason to change that experience. Let us know if you feel differently!

Why am I seeing all desktop pages?
If you are seeing the entire desktop experience, it means you might have opted into the desktop site at some point from mobile web. Go the footer and click 'Mobile Redesign'. You could also clear cookies and try again or try from a different mobile browser or device.

Does the new experience include banner ads?
Yes, it does. I know they can be bothersome but ads are a reality of our business - we've tried to put them in sparingly and unobtrusively. Let me know if you feel strongly about how we've implemented; we are listening to your feedback.

Mobile web... ok that's great. But what about the apps???
We are really, really working hard on our apps. I made a post in the mobile apps forum recently about both our progress and approach to giving you the best deal app out there; you can read it here. Bottom line is that most of our current work is 'under the hood' to make the app bug-free, stable and fast. As soon as we have conquered those challenges (and there are a few) we will be introducing a lot of the features you've been asking for along with a redesigned user interface.

Again, please let me know your feedback and don't hold back - all I ask is that you're constructive about the changes and help us understand what you like and what you don't. I am reading and value every post - you guys are the lifeblood of Slickdeals and we want to make you as happy as possible.

Thanks and sorry for the long post!

I haven't been following the previous mobile redesign thread so I apologize if I repeat any issues here that have already been brought up.

I use the basic HTML site on my phone these days and love it largely because of how fast it loads. It suits my mobile needs perfectly except for one huge drawback. There's no direct access to view my notifications without loading up the full site. I just put the mobile redesign through the paces for the first time and discovered it's missing the same thing.
Sadwalk

Keep in mind, I'm not suggesting that the mobile site or basic HTML site need to have the same popup notifications that the full desktop site has, just a list like what I get when I go here. Hell, even a link to that page would be better than nothing so that I don't have to go digging for a bookmark. That's something else that I don't understand; the m. version of that page actually exists and I can pull it up on my desktop, but on my phone, I'm always kicked over to the full desktop view.

Speaking of which, why does the "Messages" link in the redesign menu point to the full site version rather than simply going to the current PM mobile / basic HTML view?

Also, I can't seem to find any reasonable way to navigate to a subforum (like FDG). Am I missing something?

When displaying search results, there's no dates listed for the threads at all. Somewhere down the road, it would also be great to see some way of sorting and filtering the results as well.

The ability to view and edit Deal Alerts is a very nice touch and something that the basic HTML site doesn't offer. Unfortunately, it's not fully implemented and the result is that it can actually ruin current alerts. (Frankly, it seems like it's an interface meant for the previous version of the Deal Alert system with only one or two very small changes.) First let me get the minor stuff out of the way: there's no way to pause/resume alerts and there's no way to edit/add/remove the more advanced filtering like category, store, etc.

Now here's an example of the big problem. I create a DA with a keyword of "foo" from my desktop on the full site and use the "Select All" shortcut when selecting forums to include them all. Later from my phone on the new mobile site, I decide I want to simply change the keyword for that alert to "bar". I do so and click save. The alert has now been unintentionally changed to search only the "Slickdeals Giveaway Winners" forum instead of all of them.

The above problem happens because the dropdown input for the forums selection on the alert edit screen in the mobile site disallows selecting multiple forums. If you had previously selected multiple forums on the desktop site, editing on the mobile site will remove all but one forum choice. In the example above, if I had done this and wasn't paying attention, it would have resulted in an alert that was essentially useless. Similarly, any and all advanced filtering options (category, store, etc) that were added via the desktop site are stripped when editing and saving from the mobile site. Messed Up

I appreciate the emphasis and work that is being put into this as well as the effort to involve the membership. Thanks as always. Thumbup

Sorry, I'm just not a fan of all the images. I get it, the new mobile site provides income from ad banners and all, but really this isn't a step forward. Now the forums look just like the homepage, which is why I always browse the forums. Sad.

As a heavy user of the "mobile" site, I largely agree. The lack of images makes it quick on any device and doesn't waste extra data for things I am not interested in reading the threads about. It is perfectly easy to filter all the threads based on their titles alone, the images are a waste of screen real estate and performance on less capable devices.

The new forums embedded with homepage is baloney as well IMO. I guess the target audience is super casual facebook logins that want everything to look like a feed of some sort. I am perfectly happy with less bloated properly color coded classic forum threads.

Can we at least keep the current mobile version as an option?

Right?

Not sure why the **** websites make layout changes to their websites and don't give users the option under user settings to keep the old layout.

I don't like the new version compared to the current m.slickdeals.net. Please at least give us an option to keep the old mobile version if we want and don't force the new look down our throat!

And no... the basic HTML version isn't the same as the current mobile version of m.slickdeals.net, which is what I'm talking about.

Ads within the forum? Really? I also hate the new background color. Definitely won't be visiting if it looks like that

You have to scroll TWICE as much on the new site. Also, the images need to go. It makes the new site hard to read (I'm using a Nexus 4, so the same screen size as the new iPhone 6). Finally, I count 3 banners for on the first page, so 1 banner ad for every 10 posts?

I've been using SD for years. I went away from the regular site because of all the junk added, now you are screwing up the mobile site in the same way.

The only step forward on the new site is added revenue for SD. You already get money for each link that is clicked, but the fewer users the fewer click through kickbacks you will see.

I use the current mobile site on my phone, tablet, and computer. Frown The desktop site uses 3x more RAM and has too many columns on phone/tablet screens, whereas Basic HTML has smaller fonts and doesn't look as nice. If the current mobile design is retired, I'll probably fall back to Basic on my phone and 10" tablet, but the text gets pretty small on 7", so I'm kinda screwed there.

Specific suggestions for the new mobile design:
  • Add an easy-to-reach "no thumbnails" toggle, so we can save data and see more items on the screen at once. (In this mode, put the rating and comment numbers side-by-side instead of vertically stacked, to reduce vertical padding.)
  • Give the thumbs-up/down ratings some color, so we can glean the info from peripheral vision instead of having to stare directly at each number.
  • Clicking on the page number at the bottom of the board should let you type in a number and jump to that page.

I 100% agree with all of you. We need the mobile site at least as an option. A toggle in the user control panel at least. The new site doesn't provide glance-able information and is a chore to browse.

The beauty of the current mobile site is the ability to browse multiple pages of deals with minimum to no effort.

I also agree the m.slickdeals.net is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than the basic HTML site. The mobile site is developed and designed very well. Please give us an option to keep it.

I don't understand why, even after a redesign, basic functions are still missing from the mobile version. Like rep and follow and multi-quote. I always thought redesigns were meant to make things better.

As for new problems, we can't see any details about who posted the deal in the first place, and I haven't found a way to quote them on mobile. Unlike the reply button on comments, the reply button on the OP doesn't quote the contents. Also, when opening a link from an email, the page doesn't scroll to the right post automatically, like m.slickdeals does.

Can I second the part about reps? I've noticed that I very rarely get repped any more. One could argue that I've not posted anything useful or entertaining recently, but I've noticed many other posts in which the deal is getting tons of thumbs up, but the poster does not appear to get any love. On a couple of occasions I've encouraged posters to show some appreciation, and have gotten the explanation that they are on their mobiles.

I get that reps aren't a useful commodity, they can't be cashed in or anything, but I do think they encourage helpful, useful, or amusing participation. I would be interested in whether the site is seeing a decrease in participation due to the lack of positive encouragement.

Been a long time since SD added a "feature" that wasn't directly tied to SD raking in more $.

I don't think people were clamoring for a mobile redesign. But now they are clamoring to leave it alone. So hopefully SD will listen and give people the option to keep using the current mobile version.

love the original m.slickdeals.net site.

please remove the click to see more button and just add more to the original page load.

also add the "trending" and "popular" at the bottom, or readily accessible via menu.

although I understand the need for increased revenue via adds, the new design will almost surely decrease my page visits. if I don't get the information I need quickly (is loading slow, or too many buttons to access content), I will find a quicker alternative, or just not visit the site.
