Hey guys,

I didn't see this posted, so I thought I'd share. This is a new rebate offer that started today!

External Hard Drives:NOTE: Several SD users have reported that the drive inside this enclosure is the 5 TB Western Digital Red 3.5" IntelliPower NAS Hard Drive (WD50EFRX) [amazon.com]. This bare drive rarely goes on sale for less than $190.

OPTIONAL COUPONS:
OFFER #1: You may also save $10 off $100 with this special TigerDirect "Happy Anniversary" Coupon [tigerdirect.com]
OFFER #2: You may also save 10% off Your Total Purchase with this recent offer.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

What is the difference between RED & Green?:
Reds and Greens are the same drives except that Greens park the heads every 8 secs on idle whereas Reds are set to 300 secs.

read this post: Hacking WD Greens(and Reds) with WDIDLE3.exe [freenas.org]

*The BLACK and BLUE drives do NOT have Intellipark, so don't even ask!!

Checking Red or Green?:
Tool: CrystalDiskInfo 6.3.2 [crystalmark.info] get the standard portable edition.

Run app, look at the device model.
  • WD Red WD50EFRX
  • WD Green WD50EZRX

From info that I have received from over a dozen people, the determining factor appears to be the DCM info. All of the green drives that were inside the WD Elements 5TB external drive that were reported to me had DCM: DCADBAD on the box bottom label, while all of the Red drives had DCM: DCADBAC on the box bottom label.

Ripping the drive out:
You won't be able to RMA a drive that's removed from the enclosure unless you put it back in the external before RMA. If you're careful, you can remove this drive from the enclosure and leave no signs of entry whatsoever. I pulled all my 4 out with a credit card and a screw driver and kept all the innards in a little plastic bag in case I need to RMA any of them. There is no seal or sticker that proves you opened it on these. The inside drive will have the same 1 year warranty the elements external had, so you won't luck out on getting 3 year support on these. Use a credit card to get additional warranty depending on the card.

Take lots of pictures to remind yourself how everything was 3 years later when you NEEED to RMA.

I used this video to remove mine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxMieAdiVXI

Just be patient and careful and it'll come out easily. All mine passed SMART tests so no damage done to them after removal.

Also, while most (seemingly 90% of people) have reported a WD Red coming out of this, there are still some that have gotten WD Green HDDs instead. So make sure you check these through software while still in the enclosure before you decide to cut the UPC out and send the rebate. TigerDirect should allow you to return/exchange the HDD if you report to them that you've gotten an error trying to utilize the drive.

Good luck all.

Info:

Write Speed (USB3.0): 139MB/s (subjective)

Warranty:
Inside drive: Void if removed.

WDIDLE3: How to Adjust Intellipark's Timer
1. Download the WDIDLE3 ISO image and burn it to a CD/DVD.
2. Ensure that your SATA controller is set to IDE mode from the BIOS.
3. Disconnect all hard drives from the computer except for the one(s) you want to update.
4. Boot from the CD/DVD, it should take you into DOS.
5. In DOS prompt, type: "wdidle3 /S300" to change the default timer from 8 seconds to 300 seconds (5 minutes).
6. In DOS prompt, type: "wdidle3 /R" to verify the results.

I really wish they didn't charge sales tax in TX. Oh well, already ordered the 4TB variant from BH and avoided tax there.

it's been this period multiple times before, but it's a good price. I'd say it's hot, but not slick.

How convenient that checkout is currently unavailable for the next 24 hours for the B&H deal.

More people are starting to report greens drives in these rather than reds. Seems the reds are starting to thin out. You are not guaranteed to get a red anymore.

Also, just in case you live near a store, do not do in-store pickup. TD just F'ed me out of the $20 mail in rebate because they will only honor it if shipped. Even if you order online then choose store pickup they will NOT honor the rebate.

Just got notice this week they are denying it. Just going to file a dispute with my bank for false advertising since the "terms" on their web page say nothing about being for online order only.

B&H is owned and operated by Orthodox Jews who are very religiously observant.

What's the speed of this drive? Also, how hard is it to pop it out of the enclosure and use as an internal?

Wow, that's unfortunate. I got the drives during the first event on 4/9 and the second on 4/15 but luckily I skipped the 3rd. I got red drives on both. Hopefully WD will get the hint and see red drives in externals will sell more and do this more often in the future.
