You can buy from Best Buy direct or from their e-bay store. Western Digital (WD) Red 6 TB hard drives for $234 each. The Red series is specially made for NAS drives.

Edit:
I tried to price match with B&H to save sales tax in California. After a really long hold, they said they can't match it because it's below their cost. The best they could do is $255. At $255, it comes out almost exactly the same as Best Buy price plus tax. I prefer Best Buy since they have stores locally and I can return it easily if anything is wrong.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

I bought a QNAP 212p a couple of weeks ago (thanks Slickdeals) and was waiting for a deal on a hard drive. I'm sure prices will keep dropping, but I pulled the plug and ordered 2 drives today from Best Buy. Couldn't stand seeing my new QNAP new in the box. I have to put it to use!

It's gotta be hard to pull the trigger on this 6TB when 5TB Reds can be had for over $100 less on a pretty regular basis.

Aren't the 5gb drives less stable? Always thought 4gb or 6gb was a better option

are you serious about that link?
that is to an external hard drive that is not a red drive.

People will be putting these drives into a home NAS likely in a raid group

can't do that with external hds

That's a USB external drive. Some may have Red's in them, and others may not. Speculation says the Red's may be rejects from WD (ones that didn't meet the standards, but are still usable). The external's don't have the NAS firmware. And those externals come with a one year warranty instead of 3 years.

I bought a Buffalo 4 GB NAS a bit over a year ago and it has now failed. I'm tired of one year warranties on these external drives. Failure rate is high if you put them to a lot of use (24x7).

Yes I'm serious. Those WD Elements have Reds inside them. I'm fully aware of how a NAS works, as I've run one with four 2TB Reds for 2 years 24/7. If I were building/rebuilding a NAS, I'd be purchasing those externals and taking the Reds out of them.

It is true, that is a rough price for what you can find for 5TBs lately. For an internal 6TB RED its not a terrible price point but, id be holding out for one of those 5tb external deals for close to $120 or whatever.

Some of the WD Elements had Reds in the beginning when people first found out. Now a lot more people are reporting they are getting Greens inside, even when buying from the same retailer where they got a Red. So obviously WD has stopped using the Reds in those enclosures.
