I have this laptop and I did upgrade the RAM to 12GB and replaced the HDD with SSD. Few things:
->The windows 8.1 key wont be lost. Just use a cloning sofware[I used EaseUS Free to make a clone and then used it instead of HDD] and replace your HDD with SSD. The only thing your BIOS loss for some reason is timing. So, once everything setsup, you will have to adjust the time[or sync it with the some time server]
->Opening the back is very tricky. It is not easy to remove the bottom. And you should start pulling it from where the hinges are. While pulling, I was fearing it will break the plastic back
->The screen is bright but it is a Mirror. In light conditions, you wont be able to use it because of too much glare. However, it has good viewing angles
->The entire laptop is plastic and that's how it feels <-- You sure about that? Web site says "sleek aluminum casing", so I would presume it's aluminum, or at least silver colored parts are.
->It is light weight
->The Power Cord is PITA. The way they have designed it clearly showed they didnt even bother to use it. It interfere with the USB 2.0 port that is next to it.<--The power cord head is L-shaped. Rotate it 180degrees so the L is pointing away from you so that it does not interfere.shake head

Overall, I like it but if you are typing-heavy kind of person, the flex in the keyboard may be a deal breaker for you. Similarly, there is a log of flex on the top part of screen and the hinges are very fragile so if you try to push it a little with your finger[I literally mean a little], it will wobble Smilie

Here are some screenshots of the laptop:

Hmm, according to the Toshiba official website, the 4GB memory is not user upgradable: http://www.toshiba.com/us/compute...S55T-B5152

Can you please explain how you upgrade the memory?

Answer: There are 2 slots once you open the bottom panel surrounded by 12 screws and snapped hinge. One slot is per-occupied with 4GB RAM Slot even though I didnt see it soldered[I may be mistaken]. I didnt mess with it and simply insert the 8GB stick on the other open slot[very easy]. Same is true for replacing the HDD with SSD.

Went ahead and purchased, thanks OP. Was looking for a laptop with basically these specs, along with the price I get 5% back from Shop Discover (should be doubled with the new promotion) and I also got ~$100 back in rewards through an employee rewards/benefits site, so that helps a ton as well on a $450 purchase.

I bought this laptop and got it in a few days ago. Bought a $100 Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD and installed it with zero problems. Never did anything like that before, but I felt it was easy and should have filmed the entire process so 1st time upgraders could do the same. Easy access to memory and hard drive. 4GB memory works great. Opened a ton of Chrome tabs without slowdown. I was afraid of the notorious defective Toshiba wifi cards, but experienced no problems. Original Toshiba HHD worked fine.

I looked for six months to find the best laptop under $500. This had everything. 5th Generation Intel i5, 1920x1080 w/touch, Intel HD Graphics 5500, 4-cell lithium-ion, harmon kardon speakers, right numeric keypad, USB 3.0, card reader, 802.11ac/a/b/g/n. All that was missing was the SSD. Try finding these specs on ANYTHING out there for this price.

Toshiba probably has the best display out there for this standard 1080p display. No one has compared displays on youtube, but I am going off of thousands of reviews. It could be a bit brighter, but it looks very very good. They don't want it too bright or the battery will die quicker. Even touchscreens take a lot of juice. Microsoft is the only seller who has this 1080p display for the S55T, which means it has it's own unique part number. Toshiba made this model specifically for the Microsoft Store. The laptop is brushed metal. Really looks kick ass.

I have read enough to be wary of Toshiba warranties. They seem to lie to customers. They deny a lot of claims with false claims like water damage. Hope that does not happen.

Num Lock is a small gripe. I wanted it ON when I start up. You have to look up how to change it from auto off to auto on. Simple to do.

Anyway, THIS is the model to buy if you are looking for best value. Upgrade to SSD and it flies off he charts. Period!

Is there no reviews on this?

4gb ram is a bummer, but other specs seem good.

I am by no means a tech guru. Just looking for a laptop to do basic functions and stream movies/browse the internet. Would this fit the bill?

Yes, easily. This is actually probably overkill for that.
