AT&T Free unlock portal: https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/?#/

Do NOT put the SIM in the phone and turn it on. Go to site and click continue at the bottom. Then use "Non-AT&T Mobility customer". Wait for unlock code and instructions, usually sent in a couple to few hours.

The instructions you will receive are to unlock the phone with a different carrier's SIM card. If you would like to go ahead and unlock the phone without a SIM CARD (For use with a different carrier in the future for example) follow the below instructions:

Note: If you have ATT but still want to unlock (and not use one of you 5 free unlocks per account - therefore you selected non-AT&T Mobility Customer in the unlock request) DO NOT use an ATT sim card in the phone until AFTER you receive the unlock code (usually 4 hours) or else they will send you a "denied - the device seem to be active on a customers account..."

UNLOCK WITHOUT A SIM CARD (after you have received unlock code from carrier)
1) Turn on device without a sim card
2) Login to phone
3) Go to the phone app and accept warning about no sim card
4) Dial ##7820#
5) Step 4 should bring out the device unlock screen
6) Enter the unlock code provided (8 or 20 digits) and press Enter.
7) After a minute the device should indicate Unlock Icon
8) Power the device off.
9) Power the device on. The device is unlocked.

These units do not keep time without a SIM card installed. You may not have to maintain service, but you do need to have a sim card installed. Incorrect time causes issues with SSL connectivity, which means it would only be useful to take pictures/video and listen to music.

bigted00: I unlocked the phone and it keeps the correct time/date without a SIM card. I have not run into any issues web browing via wifi

Should say AT&T in the title, since these don't unlock easily.

Offhand, anyone know what the usual "add a line" charge w/ ATT is for data on non apple phone?

I'm not sure if you're saying that the att ones are hard to unlock or otherwise, but from my experience, the att phones are very easy to unlock. I've done two so far from the Amazon deal a few months back. Very painless.

They do unlock easily. I done it with Lumia 520, although I had to wait until the IMEI number is released for unlocking.

I read on the BB deal thread that it is possible to unlock as a non-customer. In my case, I am a former AT&T customer of 5 years.. so I still remember all my information to unlock

I was highly skeptical about unlocks. At&t and Lumia have a habit of being difficult. However it was easy and free at the official at&t unlock portal. This was on the $20 BB deal with possible rewards bonus. Phone now works great with my old Lycamobile sim with data. Better call quality then I'm used to.

Go to following link

https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/...ockrequest

Select the non att mobility option

Fill in fields and you should get a code in about 4 hrs. You will first get a request submission acknowledgement email right after you submit. Then code will follow in about 4 hrs. Maybe more maybe less. Hope this helps.
