So I tired this and since Amazon rips you off on points value, I was just going to use my AMEX to charge it. However to get the $15 off you have to use your points to pay. This is written clearly in the terms and conditions of using the promotional code.

From the Terms and Conditions.

4. Enter the promotion code at checkout through the Amazon.com shopping cart. After redeeming the code, a credit of $15 will be automatically applied to your eligible purchase as long as Membership Rewards points are selected as your method of payment, at least one Membership Rewards point is used for the purchase and your shopping cart contains at least $50 of eligible products.

American Express® reports that you do not have a Membership Rewards® account. View eligible cards at membershiprewards.com/terms.
Here are additional tips on how to link your Membership Rewards account to your Amazon.com account:
• Only Cards with a U.S., U.S. Virgin Islands, or Puerto Rico billing are currently eligible for Shop with Points.
• You must be the primary account holder or authorized redeemer to use Membership Rewards points.
• You must be enrolled in the Membership Rewards program before enrolling in Shop with Points. If you received your Membership Rewards eligible card before 2007, you may need to enroll in the Membership Rewards program to become eligible for Shop with Points.
• Cards issued by American Express partners, such as Citibank, GE, Bank of America and USAA do not participate in the Membership Rewards program and are not eligible for Shop with Points.
• Cards such as the Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card, Blue Cash® from American Express, Hilton Honors® Card from American Express, Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express and JetBlue Card from American Express do not participate in the Membership Rewards program and are not eligible for Shop with Points.

EDIT: Seems Costco Amex might also be ineligible.

Edit: You MUST purchase products sold *AND* shipped *BY* Amazon. You can't buy a widget sold by WidgetCompany but fulfilled by Amazon.

amazon gives you less than 1 (about .7) cent for each point. Use your points at McD, they give the best rate of 1cent/point, that is if you can eat McD.

Amex points are worth shit just about everywhere. So far, Chase seems to be the best credit card company for return on investment.

From personal usage, the blue cash card does not give membership points (and instead gives cash that can be redeemed in $25 increments), and therefore is not eligible for this offer. Not sure about the delta amex though.

Use it right with flights and it can be lucrative. I regularly redeem for free flights @ 5cent/point

Mine was already on Amazon, I just didn't have it 'linked' with the Amex rewards. Once I did that, it worked.
