The phone is GSM unlocked, but you'll need to either flash a custom ROM or the stock Google firmware. Use Wugfresh Nexus Toolkit (http://www.wugfresh.com) for easiest results. Works just fine on AT&T and T-Mobile, doesn't have Band 12 on T-Mobile however (that's a newer thing). Bootloader can be unlocked, again, easy with Wugfresh.

Note/disclosure: the following posted by a FreedomPop employee
What is the deal?
A Nexus 5 LTE Phone for $149.99.

What happens after I purchase this phone?
You'll need to activate on FreedomPop by going to www.freedompop.com/activate [freedompop.com]. When activating, you'll be getting a one-month free trial of the Unlimited Talk & Text plus 1GB of LTE data. This plan normally costs $19.99/month.

You are always welcome to subscribe to 100% Free Plan, which consists of 200 Voice Minutes, 500 Text Messages, and 500MB of 4G LTE/3G data.

What networks does FreedomPop use?
The Nexus 5 is able to connect to Sprint's 4G LTE and 3G networks. It can also connect via WiFi.

What if I need more data while on the Free Plan?
When you approach your monthly data limit, you have the option to either have your data service suspended for the remainder of the month, or continue usage on a pay-as-you-go basis. Each additional megabyte of data used beyond your original allotment will cost $0.02 per MB.

If I'm on the Free Plan, what happens if I need more Minutes and Texts?
When you reach your monthly limit of 200 Minutes and 500 Text Messages, your phone service will suspend itself. If you wish to have more Minutes and Texts, you would need to upgrade to a higher plan.

Can I port my existing number over to FreedomPop?
Yes, you can port your number. There is a one-time cost of $9.99 to Port your number.

Can I exceed my data limit, even if it's set to suspend itself?
With automatic top-up disabled (found in the Billing Settings of your account), your data service will suspend itself when you're within 100MB of your data limit. Please note that there is a 3-hour delay in data reporting from Sprint's towers to our system, so there is a slight chance that you can exceed your limit if there is significant usage within that 3-hour window. If you're only browsing the web/reading articles, then you should be fine. However, if you're doing high data usage activities during that window (such as Netflix or large downloads), then there's a chance you can go over, since our system won't recognize that you're at your limit in time to suspend you.

Will different data connections affect call quality?
As with all phone services, call quality is entirely dependent on your coverage/proximity to your local cell towers. Call quality will be better when you're connected via either 4G LTE or WiFi, when comparing to 3G.

How about app updates?
The FreedomPop Development Team is constantly working to improve all aspects of our phone service, ranging from battery life to latency. As a result, we will release updates to our Messaging App that will increase the overall quality. In order to take advantage of these improvements, you would need to update the FreedomPop Messaging App in the Google Play Store.

How do I get even more free data every month?
You can connect with other FreedomPop users through Freedom Friends (found on your account page) and earn up to an extra 500MB of extra data, every month for free! Check out this thread- http://slickdeals.net/f/5276432-freedompop-friends

Have a Billing Issue?
We encourage all our users to come to us first to see if we can explain any charge or resolve any billing issue before further escalation.

I've heard great things about this phone.. I think I wanna just have it in my collection of mediocre phones.. This is GSM/ CDMA right? So I can choose to not activate it with freedom pop, and just pop in my ATT sim?? Can someone chime in if this is right/wrong? Thanks in advance!!

If you choose not to activate it with freedom pop, you will need to root the phone and flash to any custom firmware or to the original nexus 5 firmware. I've done it once and as long as you follow instructions, not hard at all. Then you can use your ATT sim in it.

Since 1 free month is included, do you recommend that I use up the month and do a thorough field test of freedom pop.. (From what I read from others is that they are terrible.. Which is why I was/am hesitant). If I activate it with FP, will it not allow me to use att?? Thanks

Short summary:

Already unlocked, you will need to disable the FreedomPop Messaging app to "soft unlock" it or flash factory image (recommended).

Will work on all carriers except Verizon or it's MVNOs.

No T-Mobile Band 12.

Battery life is average to below average.

Condition of the phone varies, anything from terribad to nearly new.

You may consider waiting for a better deal, it was ~115 a few weeks ago.

I got a new or very close to new unit. Mint condition. Battery life for Nexus 5 is acceptable but not superb, that I agree.

Where did you get it for $115? I don't recall it being sold that that price.

Poor phone - Heats up and has poor sound! With freedom pop/sprint network it doesn't work unless you are on Wifi. Refer previous reviews on same previous deals for the phone. The freedom pop service sucks! Even the FP guy here take ages to respond. Still waiting on my refund after an exchange.

I think they mean $150 - discounts on Choxi. I got one from that deal looking brand new. I am using just the data part. it works wonderfully for that. it all depends on how good Sprint is in your area. Atlanta has very good LTE coverage.
