Editor's Notes & Price Research

Written by Corwin

This is the lowest we've seen for Amazon's branded GSM phone and bests the most recent +199 Frontpage deal for it by $19. Note, the device comes locked to AT&T but unlock code is included with package so it can be used with compatible GSM carriers. By activating the phone you will receive 1-year Prime Membership or your Prime Membership will be extended for an additional year. By activating the device you can't return the item. If you're in the market, you should take advantage of this offer that comes with a 1-Year Amazon Prime Membership. Also includes a warranty. -Corwin

Price is now $149.99.

Looking to unlock your phone and don't have a Nano SIM? Purchase one for $0.99+tax, use code SIM99 (valid as of 7/21)

OR, from Amazon for $0.01
Edit: This sim did not work for me since it's on an ATT network! balloonshark

Note that the ebay ad reads:

Quote :
If the item is advertised as new please do not assume it comes with factory warranty, if it comes with factory warranty we will state it clearly with the phone.
and I don't see anything where they state that this phone comes with a warranty.

Something about the warranty and about activating it:
Quote :
By activating the device you may not return the item. $100 fee will apply if the device is return after activation. If the device is activation all the defect should be fix by factory warranty.

Reply from them regarding the Warranty question:

This items are brand new straight from Amazon. The warranty is a one year warranty.

What is the warranty for this? You specifically say that even though it's new, don't assume that there is a mfg warranty.

What is the warranty period for this?

Also alot of misconceptions on how to 'activate' and if you need cellular service.
You DO NOT need to activate this using any cell service. This is JUST LIKE Android where you login after you first open and power it up, and it's then associated to your account. You would only need to sign-in with your Amazon info and it is then Activated for your year of Prime.

Not compatible with Verizon, Sprint or US Cellular

Random questions answered by Slickdeals member Kumicho

Q: If you already have prime, does this add a year onto it?
A: Yes. And if you buy two phones and register both of them to the same account then it will add 2 years.

Q: If you already have a student Prime account, will this add a year to the student account or give you a year of regular Prime with full benefits?
A: You will get a regular year of Prime, with fully benefits, added on to your account.

Q: If I sell the phone can I keep the Prime membership? Are any special steps needed?
A: Once you get the phone, log on to your Amazon account. Your prime membership will be added to that account. Then just deregister the phone (under settings), perform a factory reset (at least I would), and sell the phone.

Q: Can the bootloader be unlocked and/or can the phone be rooted? Any info or links on how?
A: The phone can be rooted, see the Wiki at the beginning here: (think it's under the CM11 post? If not, check out that forum as there's plenty of information there. You have to use KingRoot, and then use SuperSU to get rid of the KingRoot app)

Q: Are either considered safe or as safe as doing the same to a Nexus 7? Would either void the warranty if the phone was bricked? i.e. Is Amazon lenient if you play dumb?[/QUOTE]
A: No clue how lenient Amazon would be, and I'd gather that the random eBay seller would be even less so. However, it's a pretty active community there, and I'm sure that they'd help you out if you get into trouble. The root is especially easy... Flashing the CM11 ROM is a bit trickier.

How to install CM11 on the Fire Phone

A developer posted on XDA Developers a ROM allowing CynanogenMod 11 (CM11) to work with the Fire Phone. If you don't know what CM11 is, its essentially a souped up stock version of Android v.4.4 (KitKat) that is community supported.

Instructions for downloading and flashing the ROM can be found here:

Known Issues with CM11
- Some apps that utilise camera are not working correctly (eg SnapChat)
- NFC is not working yet
- Google Play Services crashes, this is quite infrequent and doesn't seem to cause any major problems - a bit annoying.

Brief Instructions for flashing CM11 using Safestrap recovery:
1. You must DL the following files to your phone:
a. Safestrap recovery (allows you to reboot your phone into a custom recovery menu so that the Fire OS can be swapped with CM11) []
b. CM-11 ROM for Amazon Fire Phone (latest version found here [])
c. PA Gapps Modular PICO (allows you to have access to google services)(latest version found here [])
d. SuperSU Pack (not essential, but it allows you to have root admin privileges on your phone)(latest version found here [])

Do this by downloading all the files directly from your phone to the DL folder or DL them to your computer and then copy them to the "Internal Storage" of the Fire Phone using a microUSB cable with MTA media turned on (see info on how to do this above).

2. Flash Safestrap v4.01
a. Navigate to where you saved the Safestrap apk and click on it
b. Follow the instructions to install

3. Reboot to your new Safestrap recovery
a. Shut down phone
b. Press volume up and power button at the same time, for a few seconds
c. Phone should boot into your new Safestrap recovery

4. Wipe your Phone's data and cache clean
a. Select "Wipe"
b. Use the "Swipe to Factory Reset" to perform the wipe

5. Install CM11 ROM, GApps and SuperSU
a. Select "Install"
b. You'll see a file structure of your phone. Navigate to where you saved the files for the CM11 ROM, GApps and SuperSU
c. Install the CM11 file first, then the GApps then the SuperSU

6. Reboot phone
a. Go to main menu and select "Reboot"
b. Select "System"

7. Backup Phone
a. Once you have your phone setup the way you like it, DL the app "Quick Boot" and use it to soft boot back into your recovery
b. Once in Safestrap select "Backup"
c. Backup data by using "Swipe to Back Up" function. Backup will take about 3 minutes (depending upon amount of data that needs backing up)
d. Select "Reboot System"

8. Profit

At this time, for CM11 to be 100% functional, you need to install the ROM on the "Stock ROM" slot (meaning that you'll lose the ability to reboot back to the FireOS). Evidently you cannot place mobile calls if you install CM11 onto any other slot other than the "Stock ROM" slot. Hopefully in the future, CM11 will work on the other Safestrap slots allowing you to boot into different OS/ROMs.

So, no activation = no prime... kind of sucks if you just wanted to use the device on WiFi.

Android with Google Play apps is like shit with lots of honey on top. The honey being made by millions of bees around the planet. Overall its attractive until you bite in deep. The scent of Eric Evil fills the room.

Amazon took the shit underlayment, the OS, and replaced the honey with artificial flavor then added a $1 off daily coupon for more artificially flavored faux honey.

The result was Mr. Bezos scratching his head wondering why no one takes a bite while investors found out how to set that on fire.

Burns good.
