Downloading certain ffiles only works through a VPN. Why?

I've noticed that when I try to download some files like Windows Updates or Phone ROMs, the DSL connection drops. Like the modem physically resets. I can here the relay click. But if I go through a VPN, it downloads just fine. What causes this? I my ISP trying to filter what I can download and just disconnects the connection to my modem if I try to DL big files?

I tried 3 different modems. Samething. I don't think it has anything to do with the modem. If it did, then it shouldn't matter if it was through a VPN or not. The throughput is the same. So if it was a shaky modem overheating, it should do it regardless. Also, it doesn't start to DL without the VPN and fail. It simply never starts. The modem just cycles.

Are you sure it's the modem and not the router maybe? Wired or wireless? I think HTTS Everywhere is a good idea. Who is your ISP?

DSL modems don't contain relays!

You probably just have a crappy dsl connection and your connection resets frequently. It's more problematic on larger files because they take longer to download.

The WAN status page of your DSL modem should have various stats on the quality of your connection and how frequently it gets reset / "retrains".
