Router help needed

BKHOCKEY 113 76 August 5, 2015 at 06:45 AM More Amazon Deals
We just moved from a small 1,200 s.f. home to a 2,300 s.f. home and I think we need to upgrade our router as my teenager says he has to lay on the floor to get wifi in his bedroom.
I have been trying to read up on routers and it is all a foreign language to me so I need help from SDers.
I am not sure what info is important and what is not so I will just throw out everything I can think of:
The modem supplied by our cable company is an Aris CM820.
Current router is an Apple AirPort Express
Using Ooma for phone
Desktop is an iMac
3 teen boys with all the wifi gear that goes with it (phones, x-box, laptops, chromebooks, etc)
Amazon fire stick on 1 tv, Chromecast on another.

I was thinking the Archer C9 ($129 at Amazon [amazon.com] and B&H [bhphotovideo.com] might be good, but very unsure of myself)

So I guess 2 questions:
1. What do I need?
2. Any good deals on what I need?

Thank you!

you could upgrade the router... i am not too knowledgeable with what makes it reach further or not. you could try repositioning in your house. walls have a big effect on signal.

IMO, you may want to run Ethernet to a repeater in another part of the house. this of course will be tricky with wiring... or get a power line Ethernet hookup. this will make your house electrical like an Ethernet chord... pretty cool stuff.

You might just need to get a wifi range extender, if the router worked fine with all those devices in the smaller home, I'b bet its just the size of the new palce

Place the router in an elevated position (on top of a 4 drawer file cabinet or on top of a tall bookcase.

Change the channel.

Asus RT N66U router with Motorola SB6141 modem will do the trick. One of the best in the mArket and affordable too.

I got a wi fi range extender that uses the wiring in your house to carry the signal and it has worked wonderfully for me. I get a good signal at the extreme opposite end of my house from my router. Would say it is the way to go. I am using a Western Digital Live Wire set up.
