Verizon is getting rid of contract plans, switching its offerings over to month-to-month plans. It is making some big changes in both its device data plans and its smartphone purchase options, starting on August 13 when they will offer four data plans, with no more separate single-line or family plan options or contracts.

With these new monthly plans, each smartphone line will cost $20 a month, with tablet and Jetpack hotspot products costing $10 per month, and other connected devices like smartwatches priced at $5 a month. Here are the four new data plans Verizon will offer on August 13:

* Small: $30/month for 1GB of shareable data
* Medium: $45/month for 3GB of shareable data
* Large: $60/month for 6GB of shareable data
* X-Large: $80/month for 12GB of shareable data

New Verizon customers who want to take advantage of the new plan may do so by buying a new smartphone using Verizon's device payment option, formerly known as Verizon Edge, or by paying the retail price. Current customers can keep their existing plan or move to the new plan, with some restrictions.

Verizon doing away with contracts is a big shift here. New smartphone plan, adding components above would be $50 for 1 gb data plan.

For those who doesn't read beyond the title:

The plan is base plan + phone fee.

For the basic $35, 1GB plan and if you use a smart phone ($20/monthly fee) will be $55/month.

what about those who are on the contract free more everything plan.
I have the 6 GB - $70 data
each additional phone is $15

Would I be automatically switch to this newer plan?
which additional line is $20 a month.

I rather stay with the one im currently at but its a non contract.

Their press release says you can hang on to your plan, you don't have to switch.

yes. So $50 for 1 smartphone, $70 for 2 smartphones with 1 GB shared. I would prefer the second, medium plan - $85 for 3gb shared for 2 smartphones.

The problem is that these plans don't really save us any money. They just keep moving numbers around.

So for the smallest plan would be $50 + tax for only 1gb? FAIL VERIZON you have to do MUCH better

This isn't even close to a deal. You can get Verizon PAYG for $45/mo with 1GB, and $80 buys you 12GB that rolls over for 90 days rather than expiring at the end of the month.

My wife and I both have the contract single line plans with 1gb data for $60 a month with a new subsidized phone every 2 years. This at first looked like a good deal until I saw I have to pay full price for a new phone or their dumb edge rates. So basically I would be paying an extra $10 a month or so on this crap plan. Cellphone plans should be going down in price not up. Crappy deal.

So no more contracts means that even with a old grandfathered plan, we cannot do subsidized pricing?

$60/month per line or for both lines? If it is per line, you have 2 GB total. On the new plan, you can payment a phone, and go the the M plan, $45 + $20 + $20 = $85 for the service, leaving $35/month to edge some phones. Hope that helps.
