Note 4 corrupting mSD cards?

Dr. J 25,043 3,353 August 10, 2015 at 06:06 PM
I have a SG Note 4 an upgrade from an SG4. I brought over the Samsung 64GB mSD card I had in the SG4 and it's worked fine for the past couple months with the Note 4 before a couple weeks ago when I'd get random "SD card was removed unexpectedly" errors. I'd say it happened every other time I turned the screen on. I also noticed another issue that started happening around the same time - huge delays when turning the screen on - like 5-8 second delays I'd guess. When the mSD card was removed (no SD card at all), I don't get the delays, so they are definitely related. There was no issue accessing the mSD card from the device while all this was going on.

I removed the mSD card, did a chkdsk and reformatted it in the phone, but the problem persisted. So, I put in a vanilla mSD card I had around - 16GB Lexar. That worked fine for a few days but it, too, started to get the error.

I took a few videos for work on it last week and just noticed today that the phone isn't recognizing the mSD card at all after repeated insertions. What's worse, is now the card isn't recognized at all regardless of what I put it in.

Just wondering what could be the culprit here - reading online people suggest changing the SD card, formatting it in the phone, doing chkdsk, but I've done all that and now it seems I've killed a card.

Are you formatting the SD card on the phone or on a PC?

Neither works. the system is exFAT. I can't select FAT likely due to the card size.

One thing is for certain is that it doesn't like the old Samsung card anymore, even after I pulled the data off, reformatted it in the phone and did a chkdsk in Win7 - inserting it into the phone and on the first turn on I immediately get a "... unexpectedly removed...."

I'll likely buy another mSD for the phone at some point as now my 64GB won't work, the 2GB is screwed and I don't have anything else.

Reading more into your message those were the exact same ( slow startup ) things I noticed on a Galaxy S3 and but I was able to reformat the card and was back to normal.

there's a definite correlation. What I am trying to get over is how 2 card farked up within a week. I've tried everything I can to resurrect the Lexar card but no dice. It's like it's there but not. If I insert a reader (either the full size SD card type or USB), there is no extra "removable drive" in explorer. if I insert a working mSD card, a drive letter will appear and I can access the data. if I insert the Lexar, a drive letter will appear but if I try to access the data all I get is "insert disk" or something to that effect.

The original 64GB samsung card still works in readers on PC's but as soon as I put it in the phone, the "SD card unexpectedly removed" and lagging begins.

I'll buy a new Samsung card but this really has be stumped.

Would there be any worth in getting a higher class of card? The current one is an EVO card, but there is a "PRO" line of mSD by Samsung.

Probably not if the current one is fast enough.

How are you testing on a PC? While the odds are not good for 2 cards I am betting it's a bad card. I had similar problems to this on a older moto phone and a new card fixed it up.

I have 4 of those SD card "blanks" - the mSD card goes in a SD card "blank" (really just a physical adapter for the size and contacts) which goes into any standard SD slot. I also have a lexar USB adapter just like this:

I guess I should have been more clear. What software are you using?
