ATT uverse Internet - Own Gateway

Surprisingly enough theres no cut & dry answers on this when I do google.

Anybody had any luck running your own purchased gateway or modem/router combo with Uverse internet?

I have terrible performance out of their provided one. My wife browses her phone on facebook or twitter. My ping in games goes to like 300! It's ridiculous, the connection sharing is awful.

Any advice? I'm talking to ATT they are talking about just replacing my unit.

Looked into it and it's impossible from what I can tell. Would love someone to make a Kickstarter for this.

my advice would be to drop AT&T suckverse and find a better ISP

I think what I'm going to do is buy a 3rd party router. The tech said that's my best bet, he said their gateway is garbage and just buy a 40-50$ 5ghz wireless router.

I had nothing but problems with them in dallas and san antonio

I bought a refurbished Asus router. 45$. should work well with my Asus wireless card

horrible horrible customer service and incompetent tech support. When I setup service in Dallas everything was ok for the most part except that the ping would fluctuate all over the place and random disconnects. When I transferred service to San Antonio, they messed up something on my account. I could no longer change service features or even disconnect my service. When I called in to disconnect because I was finally able to get a stable time warner connection, the CS rep placed the disconnect order in, but it failed to send me the labels to UPS the equipment back. I had to wait for them to send my account into collections before their system fixed itself and finally terminated my account, and for the collections person to be able to send me the stupid shipping label. F AT&T and all their stupidity. UVERSE is a shitty product with shitty customer/tech support that is incompetent and worthless.

Yeah and cable is even worse.
