Comcast xfinity demo?

Dr. J 25,031 3,353 August 16, 2015 at 02:01 PM
I'd really like to switch to Comcast xfinity from dish due to price and weather, but I'd like to demo the x1 OS first. I can only find media videos online. Specifically I am interested if the "on demand" is similar to my dish OD where specific channels have OD - like History, TLC, etc. DW loves the Univision OD and can watch her soaps like that but I believe the x1 OD is more like movies and such. the channel listing doesn't help as the Dish channel listing doesn't list Univision OD separately either.

it is both but the x1 is cloud based internet goes down it does not work and you cannot FF on most of the on demand shows.

Many Xfinity stores have the X1 you can see

My daughter in college has the X1 DVR that I pay for and I have Dish. For me Dish is much better

Best Buy could have one setup in one of their magnolia showrooms.

There is a store near me and I've been there.... little chance it has anything in it. Last time I was there (4 years ago), it was pretty much just a place to pay bills and drop off equipment.

Trust me I like Dish but:
- For the same level of service (or at least the most comparable one), Comcast is cheaper mainly because I already use them for HSI, in which case bundling will save me $20-$30/mo.
- The real push is that the dish is pointed just over some trees. The signal has gotten progressively worse since we moved in here - duh, trees grow. Getting them cut is very $$$. Also I have had more and more problems with snow and rain interfering with the signal, likely due to the signal being degraded to begin with by the trees. Plus, cleaning the thing off in the winter sucks when it's 30 feet in the air.

If it weren't for the signal issues I would probably eat the $$ and stay with Dish but what's the point in paying for a service when it's not reliable? (I've been with Dish for 12 years btw).

Check out the store they have upgraded many of them in the past year or so when they rebranded to xfinity. You might also see about getting the dish moved if possible I just had mine moved due to trees at no cost, you could also probably just put some stretchy fabric over the dish to keep snow off.

I'm in the same boat as you... if I went through verizon no fios so I'd have DSL and direct tv... no way I'd get slow DSL so bundling it was cheaper through xfinity.. i got the triple play to save money and don't even use the house line.. in fact, I had to rent a special modem for $10 a month to use the phone line.. just bought my own modem and can't even use the phone line now since it doesn't have the port.. still cheaper to keep the line though

Unfortunately the dish is already at the best place on the property - I PERSONALLY installed a chimney mount to get it "up past" the trees when we moved in - talk about farking hairy to install....

Back when we owned a condo and the place was nearly clearcut, the Dish signal was WAY more reliable than Comcast. It would only ever go out on one of those freak once or twice a summer torrential downpours and never from snow.

Well stopped by the Xfinity store today... MUCH upgraded from before. Got to test out the system and confirmed the Uni OD is there. Oddly enough they don't have the same offers in-store as they do online. Also just checking online there is now a "self install" feature to avoid the $40 technician charge. to top it off the savings for a comparable package but much upgraded internet speed (x6) will be like $60/mo
