Immersive Virtual Reality gaming center opens in Australia [engadget.com]

Quote :
A new gaming center has opened its doors in Melbourne, Australia, and it's not quite your typical after-school haunt. This place, called Zero Latency, offers true immersive virtual reality experience: if you want to kill zombies, you'll literally have to walk/run around, aim and shoot a VR gun. CNET got to try it out before launch and found that the center uses a 4,300-square-foot warehouse covered in a white-grid pattern and equipped with 129 PlayStation Eye cameras. One session can have up to six players, each one fitted with a backpack that houses an Alienware Alpha PC, which renders the environment for the users' Oculus Rift DK2 headsets.

A similar project called "The Void" plans to open a VR gaming center in Salt Lake City

Interesting demo and fusion of existing tech. I would think it would have limited use cases though for a niche set of games (mostly linear FPS). Otherwise it would be way too common to break immersion.

Achievements are not for the meek, it is better to forfeit inheritance of the earth so that the mighty may look upon my gamerscore, and despair. Achievements are for men who dream; men who dare; men who achieve! Men who carve out entire galaxies with nothing more than nimble cheetos-dusted fingers and their wits, and in our leisurely twilight days we shall sit by softly flickering fires with our descendants recounting the tales of these unimaginable glories.

it would be more interesting if it was augmented reality. could adapt it to more to a social setting. like having a drink with friends and playing darts on a nonexist dartboard or bowling without a lane.

I disagree. I do that IRL. That's not what I want to do in VR.
