I thought Santa Ynez was about 90 minutes north of SB, just like SB is about 90 minutes north of LA. People who live in SB might as well say they live in LA and vice-versa, just like people who live 2 hours away from Chicago say they live in Chicago.

Long ago I went through Buellton and Solvang once and Pea Soup Anderson's. BORING. SB was boring too. Only the area near the beach is worth visiting if you like beaches and getting tar on your feet. The only thing going for it is the nice climate if you don't mind lots of fog which is why shacks start at 1M there when anywhere else they would start around 200K.

Santa Ynez is less than an hour from Santa Barbara. I'm not sure what you expected to see between SB and Beulton. It's all ranches and farms and vineyards. It's like that all the way up the 101 until you hit the bay area.

I personally like the Paso Robles region but I live in San Luis Obispo, so it's nearby.

I will say that $500 for 4 hours seems a little high. We're frequent flyers with the limo companies in our area and we seem to negotiate around $70 per hour + tip. Tip your driver well, it's not easy herding cats. Drunk cats.

Pick out the wineries you want to go in advance, you'll only be able to go to about 3, and the driver can plan the best routes. Bring beer for in between wineries and drink the water in the limo. It's there to keep you from becoming a dehydrated drunken mess. Even seasoned drinkers can look like amateurs when wine tasting for some reason.
