Dell printer = Brother (or Lexmark) clone? Same hardware or just similar...?

I was wondering, if anyone knows... Are the Dell printers usually unique versions or merely clones / rebadged OEMs? Be it Brother, Lexmark, or whatever other OEM the Dell printer seems to be the same as.

If they're the same, has anyone had any luck (or even tried) replacing Dell firmware with original maker's? (Thinking that would make generic toner usable.) I did search around for info related to this, but had no luck finding anything.

They are Lexmark, but it doesn't matter since Dell has tweaked them just enough that you will have do deal with their bios and their ink.

Brother is the correct brand to be buying.
