I stumbled upon this while looking for tires for my car. I noticed Tire Rack has General Altimax Arctic studdable winter tires with a $50 General tire rebate, and a $50 tire rack rebate. Now, I live in Phoenix so this is of no use to me but thought I'd share it here.

My size tire I was looking for, 185/70R14. $55 each tire, $220 for all four. Shipping to Phoenix, AZ is $59. $280 shipped before rebates, $180 after rebates.

The General tire $50 rebate applies to other General tires, the Tire Rack one applies only to snow tires of many manufacturers.

After all the questions on the legality of studs, added this link to the wiki. Go to the AAA site below, click on "US LAWS" - 2nd choice along blue menu bar near top - then select your state. Go down to equipment, and it's the 5th listing after tire chains. I left it on my state since I checking that. - Mr. Harley

Some advice from the Car Talk brothers regarding Studs (basically, they're against them)

Hello my name is Shane and I work at the Tire Rack. I thought I would chime in here - delete if not allowed mods.

These are a great value for a winter tire - I personally use these on my 2002 Chrysler 300M. They are a studdable winter tire but can be used without studs as a very capable winter tire. I run mine without the studs and I live in South Bend, IN where we get dumped on with snow, especially lake effect. As mentioned above, check with your state and local laws before using tires that are studded. We charge $15 per tire to stud the tires if requested. Also, if you are looking at the possibility of getting a winter wheel and tire package we will mount and balance your package for free.

Concerning pricing since I have seen people ask - we offer our best price right up front to everyone each day of the year. We do not offer free shipping on wheels and tires and there are no coupon codes. In this case there are two mail in rebates making this a great deal.

Also, most of these tires are eligible for our 2 year road hazard protection included free at no extra charge: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/roa...d/trhp.jsp

Finally, if you would like for me to double check your order to make sure everything on it is correct and we get it out the door ASAP reference my name Shane on the order and I will be assigned to your order. Just scroll down before you hit "Place Order" on the final checkout screen and enter my name.

Word on the street is they use an all-season compound on the Artics, so tread-life is amazing; I've had mine for five winter seasons, looks like it will last me another 3-4. Mine came studded, and the grip never let me down(even during the last winter season here in New England)

Bottom line: these tires are awesome; highly recommend!

I know running winter tires in the summer will wear the tread really fast but are there any safety issues for running winter tires in the summer?

Is Tirebuyer.com running the same rebate? Sometimes they also offer free shipping. Their prices are pretty good as well.

doesn't look like they're offering a rebate like TR is. plus their stock is a couple of bucks more per tire versus TR.
