Recommend a good inkjet printer

Rebound 16,622 993 August 22, 2015 at 10:52 PM
My HP Officejet broke. And, what a blessing, because their printers are just a nightmare.

I'd like an inkjet with WiFi that works well and doesn't cost a fortune for ink. I do no need a photo printer. Built in fax/scanner would be nice. Are there any good products out there?

I've been quite happy with my Brother MFC-J470DW. It does it all and generic ink is dirt cheap. Smilie It's been connected via Wi-Fi for a couple of years with issue. It will even automagically connect to the PC that you select from the printer panel when you want to scan to a file.

I'd second the Brother recommendation. It's the sort of jack-of-all-trades printer that is perfect for a home office. Never tried it as a fax, but I've been getting a lot of mileage out of the scanner/document feeder recently. Everything works wirelessly, setup isn't terrible, and I only need to reboot it once a month or so at this point. Earlier firmware versions were kind of crap, but they seem to have fixed most of the bugs and things have been pretty stable for the last year or so.

If you don't need it for photos, then you should get a color laser. They are cheap now and consumables last longer as well as they are 10x faster on print speed. You can get a nice color laser for well under $500. I have a Oki c5500 that has never given me a day of trouble.

Do you need color?

If not I have been impressed with the Canon Laser Multifunction devices. 3rd party toner is available and works well. Best of all you don't need to install 50 programs to print like you do on an HP.

As far as inkjets go, I also had a cheaper model HP that bit the dust last year and was actually glad it did.
I replaced it with a Canon Pixma MG7520 for about $80 (with Adobe Photoshop Elements on a SD deal).
It's wireless, easy to setup, and has performed outstanding, and tho it has a nice scanner it doesn't have any fax feature (which I don't need or desire). Generic ink tanks on Ebay are cheap and work well.

In fact, I've been so satisfied with it that I also picked up a Canon Pixma MG5620 (a 'little brother' to the 7520 with similar features), as a backup, for $30 on a SD deal this past week from Frys. Both are worlds better than my former HP.

The big canon Mx922 is decent and there's lots of super cheap ink cartridges on e-bay. Just paid $5.35 for the 5 cartridges shipped and they work just fine.
