Suggest a Network/Phone that works in India

goodesi 536 168 August 24, 2015 at 11:15 AM
Hi,

I am planning to buy a cell phone that can be used internationally, especially India.

Can you guys suggest which US cell network/phone suits the frequencies/bands in India? (T-Mobile or AT&T)

For frequencies in India please check the below link:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lis...gion#India

2G capabilities
GSM 900, GSM 1800

3G capabilities
UMTS 2100

4G capabilities
LTE 1800, LTE 2300

Thank you.

Are you looking for a smartphone or feature phone? Budget?

Are you wanting a sim card before you go or are you wanting to buy one when you are there?

Personally when traveling in Europe I have had good luck buying a local sim in the country I am in.

- Smart Phone

- Buy the SIM once I am there

My intention of asking those questions is to buy a phone in US that is compatible internationally.

I know no phone frequencies/bands match exactly with other networks internationally but I would like to buy something that matches the most.

Tmobile supports free data and texting in India with any simple choice plan. I've used it in Mexico and Europe and it works quite well. You're not going to be streaming youtube videos but for emails and google maps I was a happy camper.

Do you mean to say that the phones bought in US are not compatible to stream videos?

the international t-mobile service is 2g, which is too slow - if you were to plop in a local sim card, you would not have this issue

Yes, I will use the local SIM card.

So, my conclusion is that T-Mobile phones are more compatible than AT&T based on the Indian bands/frequencies I provided in OP.

Correct me if I wrong?

A T-Mobile or AT&T phone will generally be locked to T-Mobile or AT&T. If you want to use a local sim, you need an unlocked phone.

Assuming wikipedia is accurate, you're interpretation of the frequency bands has a mistake. It doesn't look like there are any Indian carriers who operate LTE @ 1800MHz.

Get an unlocked phone that supports the carrier / LTE bands you want to use in the USA and supports HSPA+. Stick to UMTS/HSPA+ in India, no US carriers use band 30 LTE (2300MHz). A moto e or moto g could be a decent choice.
