Flash Tomato Firmware on Linksys E1200 V1

sakdeals 1,272 571 August 29, 2015 at 10:21 PM
I have Linksys E1200 v1 router. Its Firmware 1.0.04
I wanted to try Tomato firmware on it.
I downloaded firmware from Shibby website. - http://tomato.groov.pl/download/K...niIPv6.zip

I tried 30 30 30 reset and flashed the above extracted bin file thru Admin> Firmware upgrade.
It Starts and comes back as upgrade failed error.

I couldn't find any flashing instructions for this router.I saw similar once in youtube but all shows to just update thru Admin > Firmware upgrade.

Not sure if i am missing something or i am doing something wrong.
Any help is appreciated.
TIA

I had a previous question about uploading the .bin file, but I see you already mentioned that. I'm not sure if there's anything special you need to do to get your router to accept the firmware image. Not all of them can flash directly to Tomato. You could try flashing to the dd-wrt web flash image first (http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index....ksys_E1200) and then upgrade to Tomato, but hopefully someone else here knows a more direct route.

As mentioned, you can't always update to different firmware directly. Sometimes the existing firmware prevents it.

Since I don't see specific instructions for tomato and I'm not familiar w/ that particular routerm and its quirks, I would (like quotidian) use the dd-wrt instructions to install the dd-wrt E1200 Trailed Initial Flash Build, which is a special build to get you bootstrapped. From there you can use the dd-wrt admin interface to update to other dd-wrt firmware, AND I would assume tomato firmware.

I did saw in DD-WRT they have Trailed build first and then flash the regular DD-WRT build.
Is Flashing tomato on top of DD-WRT is ok?

So, just to set expectations accordingly, any time you flash your router you run the risk of bricking it.

That said, yes, I've flashed tomato from dd-wrt before, and it works as well as anything else as long as you're careful. Always clear nvram/settings before switching firmwares. If you have settings for one firmware in your nvram and flash another firmware image, it may not boot.

How do we clear nvram?
I usually do 30 30 30 reset before any flash..

Yeah, the 30/30/30 clears nvram, so that should be fine.
