Alright let's chat. What are you Android/iOS users playing? What about PS Vita/3DS users?

I ask because I am in a predicament. I'd like to get a PS Vita or 3DS, but I can't decide which one or if I should get one at all. Also, I have a perfectly good Android phone but I find myself only playing games in 5 minute stints. Hill Climb Racing, Worms, Dots, etc....Would love to be able to sit down with FFX (PS Vita) or some Mario/Zelda game (3DS) and devote some time to it. Plus nothing like having buttons (rather than touch) when it comes to portable gaming.

But is it worth it? Are there great Android games that I'm missing out on? Is there some controller I could pair with my phone to emulate NES/SNES?

I've spent a good amount of time playing Heroes of Steel. It's a decent turn-based strategy game, and rather long.
You might check out Doom & Destiny, it's reminiscent of older FF games.

Well that is just the thing, I don't really like RPGs...maybe I used poor examples in my OP. I absolutely loved Final Fantasy X, but that is the only one I ever played to completion. I'm thinking a PS Vita with FF X, Terarria, and a couple other games could make a nice travel companion.

You can definitely pair a controller for emulators. It's actually pretty sweet. I use the MOGA controller with mine and it does pretty well, physical buttons are nice. I have Android, btw.

I love, love, love my Vita. The battery lasts a while, the game selection is actually pretty great if you don't listen to the haters. I have not had a bad experience whatsoever and found a ton of little games that I would have never considered otherwise with PS+.

I did a bit of digging, seems like homebrew/emulation on PS Vita isn't really a thing. Which is fine, more hassle than it is worth I think.

What games are you playing on Vita? If I was a Vita-only owner (no PS3/4), is PS+ still worth it?

I think the experience on a dedicated handheld is vastly superior to strictly touch controls. However if you get one of those Bluetooth controllers a phone/tablet might be better than I think (never tried it). I haven't found any phone games that entertain me very long at all.

That being said, I have thought about selling my vita because I'm short on time and gaming is at the bottom of the priority list.

I have had a Vita since it was originally released but really only play it when traveling. At home a console/PC is a better option. Having had PS+ since the Vita first came out and getting all of the "free" games was key too.

I don't think getting PS+ for Vita is currently worth it because lately they only seem to give away indie games for the Vita since they are running out of options. Most of the AAA games have been free at one point

Some Vita games I enjoy are Uncharted, Resistance, FIFA 15, Need for Speed Most wanted, Dragon's Crown, Unit 13, Gravity Rush, Rayman, Killzone Mercenaries, Sonic Racing Transformed, Wipeout 2048

There are also some mobile (5 minute stint) type games such as super crate box, woah dave!, Terraria, Rogue Legacy

There are boatloads of RPG for it too but I don't personally play those

I don't find myself playing it often, usually only on plane rides.

EDIT - also, the PS Vita does have suspend and resume, so you can pause any game at any time and then pick it back up and resume without worry about saving

10000000 was fun too. I guess it depends on what kind of games you're looking for?
I've never played any FF games past 7, and other than maybe 9, I don't intend to.
It sounds like you should probably just get a handheld, if you're already willing to consider getting a controller.

I have a new 3dsxl and it compliments a phone nicely. Xenoblade is like final fantasy (I'm a 105 hours into it), and with no moving parts I believe it makes it better than the Vita. Also, no one has a vita...

Plus that new Zelda released in october with multiplayer and Mario kart/ super smash bros online is so fun. Vita has banging graphics, but comes at a cost (battery, durability, limited games).

The XL is big enough where it doesn't fit into my pockets, but I usually have a backpack on and just throw it in there.

I played Terraria on PC, and Rogue Legacy on PS3... so maybe it's that bias, but I definitely played them in much longer blocks than five minutes.

obviously, any game can be played for a limitless amount of time. especially with the vita suspend/resume feature

the point i was making that you missed is that terraria automatically saves whenever you stop playing. so you could play for 30 seconds and make progress. rogue legacy runs are also short and less than 5 minutes.

Yeah, it's totally not a thing. They have made the Vita a tough nut to crack with the upgraded security measures and overpriced memory cards.

As for the games that I have been enjoying: Velocity 2X, Spelunky, NFS Most Wanted, Guacamelee, Killzone Mercenary, Walking Dead, Limbo, Unit 13, Rayman Origins, WipEout 2048, CounterSpy, Stealth Inc, Dokuro.. Pixeljunk, Retro City Rampage.. a whole bunch of good stuff. I haven't even dipped in to the "major" stuff like Persona 4 Golden, etc.. but then again it depends on the type of gamer you are.

Side note: thank you for not making me hurt you for not finally putting the "Mobile" icon to good use Thumbup

Hmm ok thanks for the input everyone. I might start crawling Craigslist for used Vita bundles. But part of me is tempted to buy one new so I don't have to deal with some strangers greasy fingerprints.

There are a few controllers from MOGA that work with iPhone and Android. If you have Android your options are bigger. There are dozens of bluetooth controllers that will work from 3rd parties.

I have a Nyko cell phone stand for my Dual Shock 4 controller. And with a rooted device I use the Six Axis pair app. I have some N64 and PS1 emulators. I use my PS4 controller to play these games and I prop up the phone on it for easy viewing.

I consider myself to be a somewhat hardcore gamer, and there's not really any mobile games that have the polish of even 1990's games. They're all extremely pay to play/win, or just hard to play with touch only buttons.

There are tons of games that I'm sure you probably never played on N64 or PS1. Get a good emulator and catch up.

An armed man is a citizen. An unarmed man is a subject.
The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
A gun in the hand is better than a cop on the phone
