What is the best laptop for my daughter ($300-400 budget)?

bethdun1970 1 10 September 7, 2015 at 08:56 AM
I would appreciate any help. Confused

My 11 year old needs a laptop for school and to play minecraft. My budget is around $300-400 dollars.

She may want a normal screen size, like 15.6".

What is the good place that has the best deals on laptops?

Thank you,
B

I would get a chromebook [staples.com] for the school stuff - no, it won't run minecraft, so perhaps pair it with a raspberry pi for the minecraft at home or something. I don't see a full windows laptop as a good idea for a kid that young (simply too much stuff to configure/troubleshoot/fix)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/...PDKIKX0DER
On the right side choose amazon as the seller. Its 349...great deal.
Its out of stock via amazon, but it shouldnt be a long wait.

This was a front page deal

Do not buy some lame chromebook.

As fenderman noted, the i3 from Amazon is a good deal, but I would spend the extra 50-100 dollars and get an i5 based machine. More bang for the dollar. Also, an i5 based laptop (non-touch, 3rd gen or better) from the Dell outlet can be found at a good price when on sale with coupon codes (assuming you can wait). You should be able to find one in the $400 range that will meet her needs and offer decent value for the dollar though you may indeed have to wait for a sale to come along.

Does the school have any specific requirements for the laptop? Software it needs to run? Etc...

The i3 deal looks pretty good to me. I don't know if it's worth waiting for a potential deal on an i5 based laptop. Sub $400 deals for i5 based laptops seem pretty rare to me, and I'm not sure she'd really get much out of it. For laptops, both the i3s and the i5s are dual core hyperthreaded chips, the i5 just adds Turbo Boost.

Both Windows machines and Chromebooks have their positives and negatives. I would do a little research and decide for yourself which one you would like your daughter to have. There's a lot of Chromebook hate around here but they are nice trouble free laptops that are used in lots of school systems these days.

Yes, because they are lame junk easy for the no support and\or clueless school system IT staff to understand. If all you are going to do is surf the net, read email, watch youtube videos and go on lame Facebook, any computer\Tablet will do. No one does real work on a Chromebook and no one should be spending 300-400 dollars on one when for the same money you can get a real laptop running Windows. My 2 cents.

what "real work" would you be expecting an 11 year old to do anyways?

That is besides the point. Why would anyone spend roughly the same money to get an inferior product? A Windows based laptop can be used by others\handed over to someone else at a later time.

Why would you suggest chromebook when the OP specifically mentioned minecraft?

I'd wait the 2 1/2 months to see what pops up fro BF.

Assume $ for:
Laptop
Bag
Possible Software
