Thanks! Does anyone know if these books can be read on their own or do you have to own the complete series for the books to make sense?

I think both of the choices are OK for me.

Most of these books are book one of a series from one author. Can book one be read alone and enjoyed or does the first book leave you hanging if you don't own the series of books?

Here's my little trick to make that determination: On each Amazon page is a SEARCH CUSTOMER REVIEWS box (on the right side after all the review blurbs). Type the word end and enter. Usually someone has commented if the ending is a wrap or a cliffhanger. I never bother with the latter.

I would then think it is like movies that way and they are striving to entice you to purchase the rest of the series after you read the book.
