502 Bad Gateway Error (experianced on multiple devices, on multiple SD pages)

Fish_Tail 1,045 399 September 9, 2015 at 10:53 AM
On about half of the SD alert emails I have received over the last month or so, when I click the link it brings the web browsers to the correct address, but displays a 502 Bad Gateway Error page. I then hit refresh, and the page loads.

I have had this issue on my Lolipop S4, my 6 month old Windows 8 PC, and other cell devices of people I forward a link to. (one friend I think is on a new iPhone)

I don't know, but maybe this means your hosting server needs some help?

-Signed with love from a long term SD'er

WEBSITE REPORTS:
--------------------------------------------------------
502 Bad Gateway

The server returned an invalid or incomplete response.

* crickets *

This problem has been ongoing for 2 years. Not worth the devs' time to look into, apparently. It's much more important to create snazzy new mobile apps...

This generally indicates an issue with the CDN (content distribution network) provider's configuration, not directly with the SD forum software.

Even if it's not fixable by software, it's still within SD's control.

It specifically says "The server returned an invalid or incomplete response." I'm not an expert, but would assume it means SD needs to purchase/rent more bandwidth on the server(s).

I have friends I send SD links to, because I think they would like the item listed, and it will help SD grow. But when they get a load error, they just reply bad link. They don't keep retrying.

This results in SD getting less traffic, which results in less generated revenue. How is this not a priority for the SD team?

I'm not sure where the other/earlier threads have gone (I was involved in several of them).

The best we can tell, it's account-related.

In other words, only a select few of us actually get these "502 Bad Gateway" messages.

We are the chosen ones... Wink

Here's one of them... I come into the thread on pg.3, I think:

Here is the other one I was thinking of:

And as I mentioned in at least one of the previous threads... I am more than happy to let an admin or dev team member log in to my account, in an effort to reproduce the issue.

To quote+answer Schooby from this thread:

When posting about a bug or issue you are running into on the site please add as much detail as possible so the devs know where to start when they try to reproduce it.
  • Are you using one of the mobile apps, the mobile site or a browser?
Yes to all three, but it doesn't happen in the mobile apps (that I can recall).
It has happened with my last 3-4 work computers, two of my mother-in-law's computers (desktop and laptop), my former iPhone, my current and former iPads, my Nexus 7, my current phone (Samsung Galaxy S5), etc.
It happens regardless of the (mobile or full) browser... Chrome (always my primary browser), Firefox (backup), MSIE, and Safari.
It even happened on my mother-in-law's laptop the very first time I logged into the site. No problems in 3-4 days after first arrival, using the site as a guest (not logged in). As soon as I [freaking] log in... bam! 502!
I am firmly convinced it is account-related, not browser-related (be it mobile or full).
  • We do have a mobile app feedback subforum here.
I don't recall it ever happening while using the mobile app... which is one of the reasons I've started using the mobile apps more frequently (for both iOS and Android).
But when I click on links via the mobile app, which take me to mobile browsers... oh hey, there it is again! Lol
  • Which OS are you using and which version of that?
Halfway kidding, but the easier/shorter answer is what OS haven't I been using?!
Let's see... off the top of my head, at least: Win2kPro, WinVistaHome, Win7 (32-bit), Win7 (64-bit).
Also multiple versions of iOS and Android (both bare/pure Android, on my Nexus 7, and 'Samsung' Android, on my newest phone).
  • Are you running any Add-ons?
In almost all cases, no. In the one exception to the rule, on my last work computer (Win7, 32-bit) I had the Amazon Wish List add-in (or was it an extension) for Chrome.
  • What have you tried so far to troubleshoot? Did you clear cookies and cache?
I have lost count of the number of times I have done that, always to no avail. What are some of your other suggestions?
Starting off with these will help the devs when they look into the issue.

You're really desperate to get this resolved. Aren't you? Lol, how much traffic do you think your friends that you email will really bring, to get SD's attention?

Anyway, I have the same issue, without fail everytime. Hit F5 all you want, it won't budge. Got to manually click the refresh button on the browser to correctly refresh the page. F5 doesn't do shit.

My post was from nearly 2 months ago, and I've just let it sit there all this time. So I'm not sure what you mean about me being desperate.

None the less, SD makes it's money off visitor traffic. And I'm probably not the only one with this issue. So I do think SD should give the issue attention.

I wasn't trying to attack you or anything. Neutrally reading how you wrote the post, it sounded a bit desperate and I don't mean in the wrong way.

I am desperate to get it resolved too. Every single time I open a link on SD, of ANY kind, or even post a reply, I see the damn 502 error. Then I have to refresh through the browser button (not F5) and confirm resubmitting form data to be able to do anything on SD.

Getting annoying. It's kind of becoming a habit to open a link and then hit the browser refresh button. Which got me searching and brought me here. I wonder what it'd be like to have a page load first time, without the damn error.

Ok. Well, over time I've noticed that it's happening less and less... went from like90% of the time to now maybe 30%.

How do we get the attention of the SD people? Someone official should be aware of this.

That's interesting... are you posting more, or less than you normally do?

The reason I ask is because I just realized yesterday that it happens more frequently when I'm actually posting in threads (like I'm doing now) than when I'm just clicking on deal threads to read them.

I don't have real/actual hard data to cite... but just a general awareness that it seems to happen more frequently when I'm trying to post in threads (using either the Submit Reply or Preview Post buttons).

It seems like it happens (relatively) less when I'm just cruising the FP deals and clicking on them to view the thread.

My usage hasn't changed. But I tend to get it more often (but not exclusively) when clicking a link to a SD. But that perception could be because I get a lot of email alerts.

BF time is very busy for us so all of the devs have been in high gear for a while. Now that things are somewhat getting back to normal they are more likely to have a chance to look into this for you.
Thanks for your patience.

Great! There are other threads going back months or more about this issue effecting other people. So whatever you can do to get it attention would be appreciated by many.

I for one forward SD items to friends and family (who are not members) and often they too tell me they get the issue. They don't know about the need to REFRESH, so think the link is bad, and end up never visiting the SD site!

So it's seemingly NOT account related.
