Thread Details

I have planned a trip to DFW in Oct to see my failing Dad who has been put in a nursing home. He had a stroke and seems to have his good days and bad days. I am thinking it might be worthwhile to purchase trip insurance for the airfare which is costing 700 total for 3 family members. I am curious if something happens will I be able to collect or will they say it is pre-existing condition if something should happen to him and we do not make the trip?

Is one company better than another?

I don't think trip insurance covers what you think it might cover. The trip insurance will cover if you got sick or somebody in the family got sick and couldn't make your flight because of an illness. Flight insurance doesn't cover somebody you are going to see getting sick, I think.

I understand that. If there is a death in the family I believe it is covered unless they play the pre existing condition option. after all if he dies, I have no reason to make the trip, right. BTw just called the company and if I get a doc to sign a waiver that he is "stable" and not dying they will cover it. OMG arn't we all dying???

I did have to ask if being elderly was a pre-existing condition. It isn't. Check out insuremytrip.com for lots of options. When I was younger I didn't bother with it but as my folks have gotten older I spend the extra money just in case.

I know my nephew bought insurance through the airline when he was in the army. It was probably around $20 or $30 -- but I don't know which airlines offer this option. You may want to check to see which ones do this as they may give a better rate than buying a trip insurance policy.

We recently had the misfortune to use travel ins for my daughter who got sick on the plane. My mom who is elderly had purchased it and choose one of the best options that even covered pre-existing conditions. I was glad we had it. It came from travelguard.com.

Read all the terms and conditions and go from there. We once had it and were able to get our money back for a trip (along with my sister in law and her spouse) due to my mother in law requiring emergency surgery the day before we were supposed to go. We had to fax a ton of paperwork including medical records, birth certificates, and marriage certificates to verify relationship but it was worth it.
