I really want a nexus 6 or moto X pure or LG G4 but the screens are huge. I don't want a giant phone. I have yet to find anything that is not an iphone 6 with a smaller screen that is powerful too. I am on sprint..

The new Nexus 5 is rumored to be coming out (or announced?) in a few weeks. That would probably be your best bet if you want something "smaller."

If you want something actually small, your kind of out of luck. The Z3 Compact was probably the only good small phone of the last generation, but Sony has all but given up on the US market, and really selling smart phones in general it seems.

The moto G/G2 has cyanogenmod support, I would just go for one of those - yes, it's not a flagship phone, but as you mentioned, those are larger

The rumor spec leaks are kinda weak. What I don't get is right now the nexus 6 looks like it has better specs but right now costs 50 dollars less. It seems like every smaller phone has gimped specs and cost just as much

Blame Qualcomm Smilie

Until the snapdragon 820 comes out early next year, the only top of the line CPU available to Android manufacturers is the Exnyos, and that's Samsung only.

The performance difference between the 810 and the 808 is pretty much nonexistent once you factor in temperature based throttling. The 808 is the best CPU available right now for any phone that doesn't have a giant heatsink sticking out of the side. Either chip will slightly outperform the 805 in the n6, but not by much.

If you want power, get an S6 or wait 6 months for the 820 based phones to hit the market, because Qualcomm really dropped the ball on their current generation of CPUs.

I don't want another samsung ever again. On sprint root and roms are always last for sprint and people stop making shit for it a year later.

Its not the CPU that is the problem. The screens are usually worse and less ram is the issue.

I was going to suggest one of the Nexus devices, but they are usually a gen behind due to trying to keep the off contract price down in comparison to the flagship phones.

It will likely be one of the Moto's for now, and not likely to be much better by years end.

Nexus 6 came out same times as S6 and Note 4. It had 3 RAM, Opitcal Image Stablizer, Dual stereo speakers, faster benchmark tests because it didn't have Samsung bloatware, with a 6" screen in quad HD resolution. How is that behind?

An armed man is a citizen. An unarmed man is a subject.
The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
A gun in the hand is better than a cop on the phone

The specs I've heard are 3GB of RAM and a 1080p IPS screen. That's not a weak phone by any stretch.

People keep trying to put 4K or 1440p screens on 5" phones, but it's a terrible idea. A 1080p 5.2" screen is ~420ppi, which is more than enough. The iPhone only has about 400ppi. It's the quality of the display that matters. I'm not sure if you're referring to other rumors that would indicate a low quality panel, but I haven't heard any. The higher PPI screens require more power to run, and considerably more graphics hardware to maintain similar framerates, which of course eats even more power.

3GB more than enough RAM unless, like Samsung, you've gone and put some sort of stupidly high res screen on your phone and all of a sudden need to upscale all your graphics by a factor of 2.

The phone you're looking for is the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact
Buy the phone outright and then port your number to Cricket or some other prepaid wireless service

This is the path I took precisely because Sprint phones never get support (or it dwindles / dies off after a year) and I was sick of Samsung phones.

Now I get better service (where I live), have a much better phone, and only pay $35 a month for my plan.

After ordering a deal immediately delete your deal alert. You got your item; you don't want it shipped with a side of remorse.

Get a Z3 compact (or the Z5 compact that's available in October). I love mine -- full flagship specs with fantastic battery life. Fits in my jean pocket and I can't even tell it's there.

I don't personally root or use custom ROMs anymore, but my understanding is that Sony makes it easy to do this on their Xperia phones. You'll lose a couple DRM-protected features in the process, but nothing that you probably care about (like buying media via the Sony apps and a noise-reduction algorithm in the camera).
