Thread Details

My son just started taking drum lessons, and he's really into it. We'll see how long his enthusiasm lasts, but i'm thinking getting one of these music games might help him practice in a fun way. He's 7, if that matters.

Looking on Amazon and Gamestop and Ebay, i was very confused. Does anyone have a recommendation for what instruments to buy, which game(s) to get, and where to buy them? Do i go for a bundle, or buy everything individually, etc etc?

I've never owned any of these games, so i have no allegiance or previous instruments. Wireless would be handy, since we play games in my basement home theater, and the components aren't so close to the playing area (but i could make it work if need be). I only have a PS3, and don't feel a need to upgrade at this point.

Thanks!

You are definitely a little late to the game, so getting the hardware for PS3 is either going to cost you a pretty penny if you want it new, or you might have to purchase it used through ebay.

I would recommend you get Rock Band, and you can find games in Amazon, Walmart, or ebay.

Good luck, and enjoy!

Thanks all. Yeah, i'm seeing that about the prices. I'm really surprised the instruments didn't seem to depreciate at all. Guess i'll troll craigslist and ebay for awhile. Sounds like the RB2 or Beatles RB instruments are the way to go.

Definitely. May want to check into the cymbal add-ons too.
I prefer the Guitar Hero guitar controllers over the RB guitar controllers, however.

Seconded on all counts.

Guitar Hero "guitar" peripherals are better than their Rock Band counterparts, but the drums on Rock Band BLOW AWAY the ones on GH.

The reason for this is because GH's drum layout is awkward and unnatural. I am a drummer and I've never felt right using GH drums. Rock Band, especially with the cymbal add-on (highly recommended), is the way to go. If you can play a RB song on Expert, you can pretty much play it on drums.

Hmm interesting take because I could play a bunch of songs on RB Expert but could never really translate it to real drumming. I am terrible with music though and think I play RB reactionary to the on screen prompts instead of really learning the song though.

The RB2 drum pedal seems to hold up a lot better than the RB1 one so I think you're heading in the right direction.

My RB2 pedal broke a few weeks ago. I'd say it had a pretty good run. So I'm using my RB1 pedal until the new drums show up.

Good information, much appreciated. Found a couple options on Craigslist to pursue.

In case you were all itching for closure, i ended up buying a RB2 set on CL. $100 for the wired drums, kickpedal, the game, wired mic, and 3x guitars (all 3 with wireless dongles). I'm making the wired drums work via a USB extension cable. Pretty fun so far, although i'm now tired of hearing "Eye of the Tiger" from my son trying to learn its drum part.

Nice, glad to hear it! Not the Eye of the Tiger part, though..
