Good experience with Freedompop?

Hey Everyone,
I bought the Firephone a while back and my original plans of putting the free 200mb/mo tmobile tablet in it didn't work (the sim knew it was in a phone). So I'm looking for alternatives. I see Freedompop supposedly has hotspots with 500mb of free data each month. Is this true? I don't want to get put into some hidden fee contract that's impossible to cancel. 500mb would be plenty for my needs, it will just be to use Waze on the firephone.

If Freedompop is really free for 500mb a month does anyone know of a good deal on one of the hotspots? I heard (maybe on this site I can't remember) that I'd need to get an LTE one because wimax is ending. I currently have the 5X Ebay Bucks promo so something on ebay for around $50 would work. I think the LTE hotspot on Freedompop's website is $67

Thanks!

You should check out some freedompop threads on here to get more details about the service. I got one of their usb modems a long time ago and it's been free with no problems since. A few people have difficulty either following directions or just bad luck and had some charges to their accounts, but I can't complain since it never happened to me.

The biggest issue right now is that free data plan is relying on the wimax 4g network which is going to be shut down in November 2015. So for you to put money into this now, I don't see it as a good investment for a couple months of free data.

For a 4G LTE hotspot for Freedompop you would have to pay actual money. The ones they give away free are 4G WIMAX (free service but phasing out very soon) and 3G which is slow and costs actual money for service.
Your best bet for free service is to use the fire phone in CDMA mode on Freedompop (Sprint). I don't remember exactly how you do that but it can be done. Problems come in when you update android. I don't recall what the problem was but when you update you may need to employ a fix of sorts.
If you go that route you will get 500MB of 4G LTE / 3G (both free) depending on Sprint coverage in your area. Sprint coverage is spotty but good in metropolitan areas. You can get up to 1G/month if you add 10 "freedompop friends" (it is free).

The bad:
rural areas, not gonna happen
voice is via VOIP, crappy call quality even on 4G LTE, so-so on wifi

The good:
free 4G LTE AND 3G data up to 1GB/month in metro areas and along many interstates

With an LTE hotspot I'm pretty sure if there are charges for 3G.

I just use their free stuff with an S3.

Be careful to decline "free for a month" offers or cancel them promptly or you will be charged.
Disable top up unless you want to pay for overages.
Read the fine print so there are no surprise bills.

Read some freedompop threads like the other guy said and the fire phone threads, it can be complicated as you can see.

Thank you both. This is confusing. I had no idea that the free stuff was all wimax. I'll look in to the fire phone CDMA thing. On Freedompop is there just a "have my own device" option? My plan is to use the phone just for waze. I have another phone for my normal stuff

I too have other phone for normal stuff but I had Hydro for three months now and I had used it for past week intensively just to test out Freedompop as services/products and here's my observation and what just came up now. I am looking for another FP phone but I am not in rush to purchase soon. In my opinion it would be better to sell your phone and get on FP deal when it comes up.

The Hydro I received was in perfect condition because little hair line scratch I thought it had, was just a mark that came right off after using rubbing alcohol.

FP phones uses LTE. The data speed on the major road is okay I got anywhere between 0-27MB down and 0-14MB up all over and at one point I had like 27/14MB D/U near NYC but data is near none in the residential roads in CT/NJ. Using many chat/call programs Google Hangout, Whatsapp, FP messenger plus Facebook data seems like last forever.

The only problem I had and have is the other side hearing me clearly on Freedompop/Hangout. I read review and this could be phone issue but I don't know and I am not about to spend my time on it to fix this myself. I got it as loner/backup so who ever receive this can figure out themselves.

Past three billing cycle, FP had not charged me a cent yet after I downgraded everything and turned all the services off. And I hope it stays that way.

Overall, I am happy with service and phone that FP provides but folks really need to know what they are getting themselves into. If people can live with data losses and frequent lost calls, FP is great service to have as loner/backup.

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking at the LG Volt FP phone, just need to confirm I can use waze for it. Like I said, that is all I will be using the phone for, no calls, no emails, chats, etc. Just Waze. I'm weary of freedom pop because their website looks like a scam site designed to trick old people in to clicking stuff they shouldn't. How hard was it to cancel the trial and everything? Hoping its something that can be done online and not where I have to spend an hour on the phone with someone saying "no, i dont need it"

Sorry but I haven't used Waze since when I had tried on my old S3, crashing and battery issue, so I wouldn't know.

With small opting out menus and confusing popups, their website do looks like some sneaky advertisement/virus cleaner scam site but I was able to downgrade and optout of everything online. When I did it months ago, it was quick and easy following some wiki posts here on SD. Just be proactive about the account settings and you will be fine. When I had doubt, I disabled it. Like when FP supposedly had "free" unlimited call and text special for only Hydro sales, I just disabled, downgraded and opt-out of everything and made sure it only had 200/500/500 phone/text/data.

How do I know if I cancelled everything?
I went through every page I could find and cancelled the services but this still shows unlimited talk:

I did... Nothing says it costs money on my plan but it says unlimited talk and text which doesn't seem right.
