I was looking at games for consoles lately and it seems like there is a trend now of the game companies releasing "Day One Edition" of the game that includes exclusives if you ordered the game at launch or they will offer pre-order dlc depending on what shop you pre-ordered the game from... what do you think about this trend?

Makes complete sense to me because you are paying more, not waiting for a price drop. And then those of us that are getting the $10 pre-buy credits at BBY or elsewhere are just making out more.

Doesn't make much difference to me, since I don't usually buy games until they've been out long enough to have a GOTY or some kind of edition that includes all the DLC at a lower cost.

My only beef with Day One editions is when they include multiple "exclusive" items for different retailers and then not making those items accessible in any other way.

Not a fan of them since it basically means you are paying before full reviews hit and you run the possibility of paying full price for what may be a broken game. Most games drop in prices rather fast so it is a risk.

That said, I have actually done it a few times. Bloodborne, Dark Souls 1 and 2 for PC (since I already knew what I was getting into due to the staggered dates on the PC release) and Little Big Planet 2.

Most of the time you can get credit to offset it, or a plush Sackboy doll to make it all worthwhile.

I personally like the fact that you get a little something for paying full price if your really excited about the game like for example if you pre-ordered Demon's Souls the day 1 edition could have an exclusive armor set or something to that end that isnt tied to the shop you purchased it from but instead its tied to the release edition of the game. I think it would go a long way towards making fans of the games feel like their getting more for their money instead of like if they got ripped off and that they should have waited until the game is $20 with all the dlc a year or two later.

If they feel ripped off, that's their problem, not the game maker's problem. You can either pay more up front to play a game right away, or you can wait a long while and pay less. It's not as though there's some mystery involved there.
It's just like how you can go to see a movie when it comes out in theaters and pay more, or you can wait six months and pay a buck to watch it from Redbox. Do people feel ripped off when a movie comes out on Netflix, Prime Video, or Redbox, and they paid more to see it in the theater?

I just wish there were an easy method to selling some of the DLC items that come with them. I typically don't care about whatever they unlock, so if I can get an easy $5 by throwing it up on ebay, then that'd be great. Unfortunately it's against ebay policy so i roll the dice every time i do it that my listing will get taken down, and potentially my account could be suspended

Think they're garbage, especially for new IPs. Here's a new game, no reviews, and they want $80. Don't give you any discount for helping them financially for paying full retail. You wait a few months and get the GOTY edition for half off with everything.

But this is a capitalist society and you vote with your wallet. Obviously enough people think its OK because its still going on.

Yes. Because people have nothing else better to do. You must know by now folks will find an angle of attack to feel personally wronged by damn near anything: "What's in a name - Redbox and the new DVD rental rape culture." "Netflix pricing: American Transgender Inequality Horror Story." "Gauging diversity in the post-Amazon Prime era."

Zero day pre-orders are for chumps. Witcher 3 seems like the only one that would've even been remotely worth it in recent memory...

They don't matter to me because I never buy a game on/near release date. 4-8 months out usually is a sweet spot for getting the game at over 60% off either from GameFly or BB with GCU.

Exception is Assassins Creed series... which seems to go to 75% off in only 3 months every release!

Also means I don't deal with release date bugs/patches and my backlog is more than ample to keep me busy until the new games come out.

That's because they put out a damned AC game every three months.

Yep. Assassins Creed especially, but pretty much every third game these days should be paying royalties to DICE for introducing parkour in Mirrors Edge.

laugh out loud You want to not pay full retail because you are helping them out by paying full retail?

Just pointing out the flaw there because the whole point of the thread is that the Devs ARE giving something to the people that are paying Full Retail.
