Choosing a MB and Processor from Staples

BracS 56 10 September 21, 2015 at 10:08 AM More Staples Deals
My backup computer died, and I have some Staples gift cards I wanna use up. I don't see any decent deals for a PC or laptop. I could use either so I was thinking I would just build one. Anyone keeping up with what they have for MB and processors?
Mostly just used to check email and DL large files.
Thanks

If all you need is something for the internet, then an i3 based desktop is all that you need. You can get those anytime for under $300. Just shop around.

Building one is a complete waste of time and likely will cost you just as much if not more than if you had bought one on sale. I know there are people here who will claim you can build a better machine, but with Dell selling the likes of i5 and i7 based XPS 8700s for under $600 on sale from the Outlet in the right deal, it just is not worth the trouble to build your own unless you are some cutting edge gamer or the like. When you factor in OS, warranty, burn in costs (to say nothing of time and effort), it will just not pay to build your own.

Thanks for the advise, found a refurb i5 for <$300 at Staples and given the specs it would cost way over that to build the same computer.

Seems low on RAM and no SSD. Might want to upgrade those w/ SSD being the priority.

Thats old junk first generation i5 - 300 for it is a rippoff..what yanksln was referring to was systems at the dell outlet. For 300 dollars you can get a modern haswell forth generation i5....sell you staples gift cards and buy a dell refurb.
If you insist on buying from staples, this modern haswell i3 system will be faster and more efficient than the refurb

The 8100 is a 5-6 year old system.

its better but not a good choice, you are paying for a 4 year old system. You can get a two month old system or a new system for that price. The 8200 used second generation sandy bridge processors...why buy and old system?

Dell Outlet frequently runs sales with coupon codes of 20-40% off. Add in Discover Deals discount and you can get a nice deal if you are patient. The XPS 8700 is the machine of choice, but right now they are out of stock. They have a code for 35% off Inspiron or XPS desktops.

An Inspiron is around that comes with a i5-4460S proc, 8 GB Ram, 1 TB drive all for $331. Not that I would recommend that particular machine (though it is OK probably for your needs), but if you hit them at the right time when they have a discount code and XPS 8700s in stock, you can secure a very nice deal.

As Fenderman noted, there is little to gain in going to Staples usually for something like this as they are usually overpriced or sell outdated machines. You can always sell your gift cards to someone.

As for Windows 7, it will run on any machine if you want to go through the trouble of re-burning it. I probably would upgrade to Windows 10 though if the machine comes with Windows 8.1 since it is less trouble doing so and you do not have to go hunt down all the drivers potentially.. No one likes Windows 8.1, but 10 has supposedly fixed the most egregious issues with it.

A deal like that is definitely worth waiting for. I set up alerts for Dell Outlet and XPS 8700. Thanks for the help!

Hard to believe the day I ask about this a 35% code is live and stock get loaded. So I just ordered this one from Dell Outlet for just under $350 after tax. How did I do?

Processor: Intel Core 4th Generation i5-4460 Processor (6MB Cache, up to 3.4GHz)
Windows 8.1 Free Windows 10 Upgrade, 1 TB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
8 GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz (2x 4GB) Non-ECC, Tray load DVD Drive (Reads and Writes to DVD/CD)
2 GB NVIDIA GeForce 705 DDR3, Dell Outlet Inspiron 3847

The kicker is this is way faster than my primary computer so I guess I will swap out and put this one upstairs Smilie
