Hard drive disconnects when transferring files

ima4ltrwrd 1,629 427 September 22, 2015 at 02:15 PM
I recently upgraded to Windows 10. I have been trying to move files around on my computer and now when I transfer files between two drives, the drive disconnects itself after several minutes of transferring, then is no longer visible in windows explorer. I have to reboot the computer to get the drive back online. I have tried updating system drivers, checked cables on the drives, and drive chkdsk with no success. The drive that disconnects is a brand new 3tb drive. Anyone have any recommendations? thank you in advance.

I wonder if it's getting enough power.

Did you add the drive before or after the upgrade to Windows 10?

I added it after upgrading to windows 10, and my PSU is 600W so should be enough I believe.

I'd just replace it under warranty or return it. If it's new and it doesn't work in an otherwise stable system, it's probably the drive itself that's bad.

When it "disconnects" does the drive still show up in windows explorer?

When it's acting up open device manager and see if the drive is listed, click on it and see what it says about the status of the drive.

Did you run any diagnostics? Model,Make more information would be helpful. Try booting off a Linux CD and try the same action and then you eliminate the hardware and focus on the OS if no problem is found.
