Reinstalling OS Lenovo Laptop

allison77090 236 14 September 23, 2015 at 05:47 AM
My harddrive crashed on my Lenono Thinkpad laptop. I have my CD's. I went to look to get my product key and realized its gone underneath my laptop. Seeing how I bought a new harddrive and I have looked everywhere for my paperwork, the only thing I could find was the installation CD's for it. I went to their website and signed up but I am at a loss for what my next step should be. How do I obtain my product key if my harddrive crashed?

It's embedded in the bios. Using your recovery files your will be fine.I would suggest a SSD over a hard drive if you can.

Sometimes manufacturers put the Windows COA sticker inside/beneath the battery. Have you checked there? If not, like LiquidRetro said, the key/COA is embedded in the BIOS/NVRAM and should be validated by the Lenovo installation discs.

It's been a long week... Or I'm desperate to get my blonde touched up. What is SSD? I can tear open a computer.

Now that I've reread, I'll check out the hard drive.

Was this Windows 7 or 8? I went through this recently on my laptop (windows 7) and the key was not in the bios. Luckily the installation media had the key built into it and I didn't have to worry about it.

Several Windows 8 tablets on the other hand had the key in the bios and could be restored with a generic usb drive of the OS.

It was Windows 7 that was previously on the laptop.
